Some gentlemen near me have decided that lighter than usual quarantine traffic means it's ok to ride electric unicycles and skateboards on main thoroughfares

The big main road near me is called Rockville Pike. It’s crammed with businesses, and in normal times it’s super busy. Lately though, not so much. Twice now I’ve been out driving at night, and seen this dude riding his self balancing unicycle in the road. With no lights on his person at all.

Rockville Pike is mostly divided by an island in the middle, and you often have to wait a long time to make left turns on or off of it. Traffic is so light lately that it’s faster to turn right, go to the next break in the island, and flip a U-turn. Unless the crosswalk sign is already a blinking hand.

But still, this is not safe, and completely unnecessary because Rockville Pike has both sidewalks and frontage roads on either side of it. Clearly they were in the road for kicks.

Last night, I was on my way home from bringing my parents’ trash bins in while they’re out at their vacation house, and not only did I see this dude, but another similarly unlit dude on an electric longboard.

Kinja'd!!!

At least they were wearing helmets, but come on dudebros. If you’re going to ride these things in the street , you need to at least strap some blinky lights on like cyclists do, regardless of how little traffic there might be .

UPDATE: I see that the SEO algorithms have gotten this post out to a larger audience and I’ve now attracted many angry comments from burner accounts. Have fun getting your rants dismissed, burners!

Yep. I have seen people full on conversing in the center of a street. THey even go so far as to look at the cars approaching them as somehow in the wrong.... I know we’ve had at least a few cyclists and joggers get hit because they were “social distancing” from people walking in the street by running into traffic instead .

We have a dude riding one of these that is oriented the other way all over the place. The dude gets around and has been riding all the roads for weeks now because there are nearly no cars.

Still, we wonder about this dude being out so much.

I must say that that is idiotic to be completely unlit on a main road, even with streetlights, in vehicles that cannot even come close to keeping up with traffic.

I see a lot of jaywalkers these days. Nothing wrong with it if one is going to hustle and get out of the road, but many lately are oldsters who can’t hustle too much.

U nicycle/longboard bros might be some of the types who you worry more about your car if you hit them.

I’ve seen people driving really fast on empty roads, the cops put up a light up sign about it.

I really don’t see how someone could ride an electric unicycle and still have a shred of dignity left.

Like a longboard is fine but come on an electric unicycle.

Fractured my wrist/arm on a One Wheel A couple of years ago . That was fun to explain to everyone . “Why yes, it was essentially an electric unicycle that caused this injury over Labor Day weekend and yes I am too old to be doing such things. ” Super fun though, well, before the unpleasantness. I typically left out the part where reveal that  I actually fell trying to dismount the damn thing, but I digress.

My wife has a very firm rule against my involvement with any electrically propelled single passenger conveyances now.

Is it idiotic to ride   bicycles because they can’t keep up with traffic too then? LOL

Those electric unicycles are way faster and have a much longer range than any electric skateboard. They’re also a lot of fun to ride. You should try it before you knock it , cause right now you’re sounding a lot like the people who call Miatas hairdresser cars without ever having driven one.

Electric uniclycles are the future, they use them in the military and construction/ fabrication industries. They are an extremely efficient mode of transportation and takes just as much energy to operate as  standing in place.

Since you’ve made 4 accounts dedicated to being salty, I’ll feed one of the trolls. Miatas are great. I’ve ridden one of the wheel things. Give me a  board every single day.

Even in non-sidewalked suburbia, I’ve seen pedestrians sort of meandering all over the place, giving cars a confused look as if they think the road belongs to them.

It all has a very uneasy feeling, like an upper-middle-class version of Mogadishu that’s about to fall to the warlords.

I have been riding the electric unicycle for 5 years now and it changed my life. I started just before turning 50 years old. My legs and core are stronger and I have amazing balancing skills. I am an anesthesiologist and I influenced a couple of the surgeons to start the EUC too and they love it. The freedom and exhilaration hands free when riding at 25-30 mph  is unmatched. I have ridden the EUC in busy NYC and NJ streets with no problem.  So if you have never tried it or was frustrated in truly learning and appreciating it, don’t knock it.

They easily stay up in traffic. I know, i’ve done it a million times. I don’t understand these people who have no idea what they are talking about contributing tho. Have you commuted with one before? I have for about 2 years, and 3 years of other PEVs before that. (no scoots)
