Well, maybe if they start with the death row patients, they will know more...

Some people are using it stupidly, other people are calling it a cure instead of only one possible tool, most people are caught up in the idea that the studies on it are questionable. According the infectious disease docs I deal with this medication is a known treatment method for this type of virus. I don’t know more than that but his confidence and nonchalance in his response suggest that the treatment, properly administered to the right patients, is a known quantity already.

indeed, hydroxychloroquine is well known for it’s hot takes. I recall it once published articles on Jalopnik about how cars were bad and buses were good.

My favorite was the woman to took a little bit of HCL fish tank cleaner, gave her husband a much larger dose, then expressed great surprise when she survived and her husband died.

As ChariotofLove pointed out, i t’s used for treating other diseases quite safely. As my wife pointed out, it can cause a long QT intervals (basically, t he length of time between each heartbeat) which can slow the heart and even send a person into arrhythmia. With people who know they have heart issues, hydroxychloroquine should be avoided. It’s the people who don’t know they have heart issues who are at risk. A friend of mine didn’t know he had issues until he went for his flight medical exam. He said the EKG looked more like an earthquake than a heart rh ythm.
As with any medication, there are risks, the biggest of which is idiots taking the medications without a doctor supervising.
As you said, if properly administered to the right patients, it’s a known quantity.

My wife has RA and uses hydroxychloroquine to manage her symptoms, quite effective. I had her get a 90 day script for her doctor (even though she has enough to last until the end of the month) , and a lso had the pharmacy procure and hold the refill for her. Extra precautions for her as the world goes apeshit buying a drug that to your point, can actually do more harm than good. What a time to be alive.

“what do you have to lose?”
That was pretty much his election slogan, too. And just like now, the cult laps it up.
I wonder how much of this chemical is now being made by a Trump-Kushner consortium of recently acquired firms?

Not sure where they got their info, but chloroquine is actually one of the possible treatments that hasn’t previously been tested on similar viruses (SARS and MERS). The Chinese first tested it on Covid patients, but their data sucks. This coming from my sister who is being briefed on this stuff, but I also found a good article on it. As CoL pointed out, it has shown some promise in vitro, but it is not a known treatment for coronaviruses.
WHO originally wasn’t even going to include it in their trials until world leaders started mentioning it. There are already antiviral drugs that have been tested on SARS and MERS patients, which have been used for other RNA viruses such as HIV.
When hote l owners start mentioning specific treatments while epidemiologists keep their mouths shut, you know something fishy is going on. It may very well work, but that doesn’t mean it is the best option. And it very well could be.

Using a drug who’s only trials have been done by a country that already lied about data while other drugs exist that have actually been tested on coronaviruses and RNA viruses?
Yes, controversial, but still a possible treatment.
What’s sketchy is that our pres only mentions this one, when other have shown more promise.

How about we try it on all of those pundits that said that they’d be willing to die to protect the economy for their kids. Oh, right - they want other people to die to protect the economy, not themselves ...

Like the dumbfuck Dan Patrick - can we sacrifice him to end this mess? I am sure he would bravely volunteer, as all of these types are true patrio t heroes. Falwell too, it’s not like either of them bring anything of value to the world.
Just like in times of war, these types are full of bravado - when other people are making the sacrifice.

This is like a bad script; an egotistical French doctor published a preliminary report that HCQ was effective. He is so confident that he didn’t include a placebo comparison group in his ongoing larger trial. An even- larger- ego world leader takes this and runs with it, probably related to pharma lobbyists or even indirect ownership of the manufacturer. Meanwhile the ingenue leaves her post, implying an implosion of a love triangle? Not sure if it’s bad community theater or Greek tragedy.
As an aside, if/when I get Covid I’m going to take HCQ. It is a very safe drug and might be beneficial.
