This is the new GTX 980 on Folding at Home. Afterburner lets you set a fan speed curve, and somehow my setup and this work unit combined to have the speed / temp oscillate just a bit. It sounds kind of like the ocean, and I was about to go into settings and fix it - then I realized, no, this is perfectly fine.

Im listening to something very similar right now with a GTX570 folding away in the corner. A corner that is noticeably warmer than the rest of the room.

GTX980 here. C an confirm.
I recently started using my Macbook Pro for work, and it’s eery to sit at my home desk without that background noise. Sometimes I turn on the desktop just to hear something.
(having tinnitus doesn’t help)

MY trashcan (mac pro) is pretty quiet, then again FFH doesn’t support the AMD cards in this thing so they are never running.

Yeah, I’ll be the first to admit that I use about 2% of the Macbook’s abilities so the I think I’ve heard the fans turn on like once.

The bummer with the new MBP’s is that they aren’t actually that good at cooling. when I am cranking on it, the temp limits are reached pretty quickly and the CPU throttles back. What I’ve started doing at work is to do my work on a 1/4 inch thick aluminum plate we have, it keeps the temps in control

My 1070 in my laptop makes a TON of white noise

NVIDIA does have some nice sounding fans.

My older iMac in the office likely took damage to the temperature sensor the last time I changed the hard drive. It has been running the fan at full tilt for a few years now, and nothing I have tried seems to modulate it. I wouldn’t call it white noise though. It makes me realize how much I like the silence of today’s computers.

They’ve never been good at cooling. I’ve heard complaints about them for at least the last decade

You could have just asked me to record one of my teleconferences for you.

How thoroughly did you go over the 980 before install? The couple bucks on new fans and modern wonder thermal paste is well worth the effort required to install them.

I’ll be looking at the Accelero Xtreme III if it starts to bother me, though I am curious how much difference just renewing the thermal paste would make. Not curious to disassemble and reassemble just to change that. It would feel k ind of like doing the water pump and leaving the old timing belt on.

Older, less efficient, hotter, and noisier card? I don’t see how either suggestion was at all out of line for something that is being used hard for long periods of time. The larger idea being examining where corners were cut or losses are being experienced.
A more apt description might be replacing the air filter and putting a grease gun on some zerks .
