The very first time I drove my 2001 996 C4, I noticed that there was a water spot on the tach cover. Annoying, but easily fixed.

Kind of hard to make out, but you can see the streak going from the bottom to about the middle.

Got the car home, started cleaning and fixing things, and the damn mark is INSIDE the plastic. It’s somethi ng that annoys me every time I notice it, which is everytime I drive it in bright sunlight. However, it’s not an easy thing to get to, so I’ve lived with it.

Fast forward 3 years, and I haven’t worked in a month, nothing to do, trying to stay sane. Figure it’s a good time to tackle it. Plus, I never put a microphone in the car for the aftermarket stereo so I can use my phone. Turns out I shouldn’t have put it off. Getting the cluster out of the car takes less than 5 minutes, everytime I tackle something on this car I’m impressed by how Porsche put it together and thought about servicing.

Got it all pulled apart, 2 screws, and 3 clips. A little Plexus on a cloth, and I have nice clear gauges. Going back in was just as easy, 4 connectors, 2 screws and it’s in. Which is when I noticed that I left a piece of lint from t he cloth in there. Orange lint. I couldn’t leave it, it would piss me off even more than the water spot knowing that I was responsible. So everything came back out (maybe 2 minutes of work this time), cleaned out the crud, and back together.

Bliss. I’m rapidly running out of things to work on with this car. It’s all sorted after $15k and 3yr. Only real project left is getting the wheels refinished and new center caps. That’ll have to wait until my job is stable again, though. Until then, I’ll just enjoy the car as it is.

My thoughts exactly!

“Getting the cluster out of the car takes less than 5 minutes,”

So it should be really really easy for one of us to prank you by pulling it out, dropping a piece of lint or drawing a happy face on he inside of the plastic, eh?

Without a doubt. When I got it together and saw that lint I just sat there staring at it, going back and forth on opening it up again. On one hand I wanted to go eat dinner and have a beer. On the other, it would fill me with rage knowing I had done that.
