There was a palpable tension in the store this morning at 8 am. Lots of people wearing N95 masks, lots of not looking at anyone else, obviously unclear on the concept of, or lack of willingness to practice, social distancing . I’m going to stick with Safeway and Trader Joe’s for the next few weeks.

Theres no middle spectrum in the alarmist world. Either you care about others and society, or you dont give a shit about anyone ele but yourself and what you can get . Everybody used to try a little. Guess where the people who dont care shop....

Stores around here have started limiting the amount of customers allowed in at a time. Not dealing with that shitshow, so finally embraced Instacart. Of course, the only supermarket near me that participates is Aldi, but the prices are unbelievably cheap vs a regular grocery store.

I’ve got my mask ready to go. Eyes-only balaclava with a homemade filter mask under it, and a hockey helmet with an eye shield and jaw cage over that. I’m safe!

my local grocery store does home delivery by instacart. I been using that, but walmart still has basic stuff in stock like chicken, bread, and juice. Just strange you cant place a pickup at the time you want. When I am able to get a time to pick up im the only one there to pick up groceries with 20 parking spaces.
Walmart needs to less restrictive in the pickup department times

right - I get the feeling that lots more people got scared in the last week or so, (NY blowing up, hospital ships , federal response fiasco, etc, etc.) We try to get out and walk in the neighborhood daily and normally everybody would be friendly, saying hello, etc - but now the majority don’t even make eye contact. Interesting real life experiment in human behavior.

We’ve been using local delivery from Walmart and Rouse’s. The challenging part is getting a delivery time scheduled. My wife’s sleep schedule has been a bit off lately, so she discovered the best time to find a good delivery slot is to check the app around 3:00 am.

People in Louisiana are having trouble with social distancing. A friend of ours posted a pic from outside Sam’s Club and while some of the people in line are maintaining space, others are standing way too close. I thought they may be related, but the way they are standing makes me think they don’t know each other.

walmart is too far for me to get delivery, but yes I make an order before I go to bed to get it picked up sometimes in the afternoon.

At Costco now, very long line, but good social D in general. Line is slow but steady. I’m wearing my basic surgical mask cause it’s what I’ve got. Gloves too.Still lots of folks with no protection at all

Yeah. It’s important to ascribe these tendencies to the variety of factors that cause them, rather than to superficial characteristics.

There’s a huge socioeconomic force(s) at work here. Walmarts that are not serving a major inner city area might be a different shopping experience.

We’ve one of us been out almost daily since this thing began, wearing masks, keeping distant, disinfectant wipes in the car, and hand wash when we get home. Couldn’t keep the social distance at Walmart this morning because the store was too crowded.

I think the cloth mask directive from the CDC got everyone’s attention.

I bought a shotgun last week. Pick it up from FFL impound in a week.
President Thinkaloud was going on at length about hydrochloroquinone again on TV. Also, Captain Crozier, late of command of the USS Roosevelt, has tested positive for coronavirus. Primary in Wisconsin on Tuesday, but I am hopeful it’ll work out because people are off work or WFH and those people will all be either pissed off or white collar. We’ll see. This is a shit show.

That was my thought. Austin is not Oakland

Parts of Austin might be. Some would differ, but Oakland is a hellhole.
Still lots of folks with no protection at all

South Austin is not North Austin ( where I am).

The store I visited this morning is in San Leandro, south of Oakland. There was another Walmart a bit further north, near OAK, but it was just too ratchet. Nonstop. Ratchet. Theft, violence and theft. So they closed that one and people come down to San Leandro and San Lorenzo. There are so many social forces at work in a land of generation after generation of government dole.

Oakland is very different the higher you get into the hills. Money is there. Down in the flats is where it’s bad.

My neighborhood is the opposite. Everyone making sure to make eye contact and say hi, while still keeping their distance. Everyone waving as they drive past. Kids have pasted paper hearts all on the outside of the houses with driveways covered in chalk art. The blooming desert is keeping everyone’s spirits high.

The masks are not so much protection for you as they are for everyone else. People are giving others around them the middle finger by not wearing them.
You can’t protect yourself if you’re reusing a mask and gloves, and most people have no training on how to properly don and remove them anyways. However, they will limit how much you breathe everywhere.
People who have unopened N95 masks should be giving them to healthcare workers. My sister is working directly with confirmed covid cases and has to reuse her N95 mask between shifts. She keeps it in a sealed container.

Probably has to do with supply logistics and having people available to do your grocery shopping for you. Gotta say that hearing complaints about when you can pick up your groceries that were picked for you makes me think of this bit. I know were all trying to find some normalcy in all this and it seems quite surreal to some, and am mostly just screwing with you, not calling you out.

I wasn’t joking about the mask/helmet, either. I think I’ll wear it the next time I go to the store, just for laughs. We need laughs. Too bad airflow is not good:
Maybe when the stimulus gift hits my account, I’ll go out and find the right Ruger or something. Been thinking about it, even though I live in a more first world location than most in this country.
I notice 45 is again screaming about witch hunts, again playing the victim, again being corrupt and a nepotist, again failing to own any accountability or self-awareness. This cult would definitely risk their lives to vote in this climate - they are devoted to dear leader , so who knows what might happen in any kind of election. WI is a tough one to crack - fairly progressive history in that silent stoic Scandinavian fashion, but look what it (and MN) have created lately.

My cousin is certain that he caught his “ Beervirus” at a Wallmart. He’s got Parkinsons and chronic CDif and is a bit obese so he is the last person that needs to get this. This was a week ago thursday. It was an employee doing curbside grocery picking all while hacking her lungs out. He was in an aisle and she crowded him. He mentioned to a store supervisor maybe that she shouldn’t be there, no interest shown by him .
He was sick by following Sunday and his fever broke about last Thursday. He is s till short of breath but we did a two hour zoom conference today and he was walking around and did not cough . He is the first 20 to 40 year old to be diagnosed in his Iowa county. I think he will make it but this sucks. He regrets not using a face mask although the only one he has is for painting his cars and he says that would look kind of scary.

Grocery stores are where I get “weirded out” these days— I’m fine going into Home Depot or Lowe’s or the Pay-at-Pump gas station.
But, it’s chaos in the Wal-mart grocery section.
It’ll be “one grocery trip a week” from here on out...

We need to have laughs while at the same time saying, “I’m not playing.” Somehow, that’s leadership.
I will watch the election season with interest this cycle. The Trump base may in fact be willing to risk their lives to vote for him. But has that base grown any? It may have set more, but has it grown any?

I hadn’t shopped at one in like 15 years, the last thing I remember eating from there was their store brand mayonnaise, which I thought tasted disgusting. But, what the hell, maybe I’ll stick with it after the house arrest ends, the savings are more than noticeable.
Still wish we had a Trader Joe’s or a Wegman ’s , though.

I’ve been doing grocery pickup for a log time before this unpleasantness. Any time I’ve ever entered a WalMart I’ve felt like I need a shower afterwards... It’s not the place I want to be in a pandemic.

before shit got crazy the weekend of the 8/9 of march, when there were stories of crazy shoppers, saturday night I went to my tiny local grocery store, everything stocked and normal, and bought a weeks worth of food. The next morning there were a few items i forgot, ran into walmart @9am, parking lot was filled walked in, there were empty shelves. I grabbed the couple non food things and said “f this” to the chaos in the food section.
Swung by a week ago. Big case of nope, I’m just going to stick to my local market and costco, which has been limiting people inside, and wiping stuff down
.
