"sefeing, actually bought an E46" (sefeing90)

Finally pulled the trigger and got a cheapo (ish) 9" android (OEM- ish - look) head unit to try out on my e46, specifically to have CarPlay.
So far, it’s great! Easy to install, Android 10 and relatively responsive. It has CarPlay built in, so no dongle necessary.
The only issue I’m having is that when I plug in my phone for CarPlay, it seems to act as an antenna. I hear some static through the speakers briefly, and then a quiet, but high-pitched interference - type noise. Any other mode works fine, radio, bluetooth, etc, but when my phone is plugged in, there’s some odd interference.
Trying to figure out if I should swap units, or if it’s just going to be the same across all of them... I really like it, I just want it to not have the noise! I’ve tried moving cables around, isolating only having one thing plugged in, but nothing seems to change the interference. Maybe I should’ve gone for the Android 9 + dongle instead.

Nice. What was the relocation kit you used for the HVAC?

If a hard-wired cable is not inconvenient, I always go that way first.

Cool. Too bad about the interference. I assume you've never had the same issue using BT on other devices? Likely there's a firmware update that can be installed for that head unit, have you checked?
Can you post the link to the head unit you purchased?

probably switch-mode power supply noise, maybe from the charging circuit supplying the phone. Cheap hardware tends to cut corners on stuff like that.
it could be a ground loop, but if the USB port is hardwired to the head unit then that might be internal to the unit.

With a much lower chance the cable used is unshielded or not seating properly.

That’s actually where the issue is occurring - bluetooth it doesn’t, but the only way to run carplay is hardwired.

That’s what I’m assuming. The USB cable is USB female on one side, and proprietary connector that goes into the unit on the other. I’ve tried multiple lightning cables, but nothing seems to change. It SOUNDS like a ground loop, but there’s no way to isolate since it’s all internal to the unit.
Trying to get the company to send me a replacement, or I’ll just return & re-buy. Of course it’s a pain since they’re china based and only reply once per day, but they have a 60 day return policy so I should be able to get it swapped one way or another. It was (relatively) cheap, and plug-and-play, which is why I’m putting my faith in a cheaper unit for now. Worst case, i’ll just return it and go back to stock. I’d been running a bluetooth integration for the OEM head unit prior that worked fine, but I got CarPlay hungry, and quarantine-bored.

Seems more like it’s hardware than software, but waiting to see what the company says. link below - it’s an Eonon unit, the most known of the random chinese brands of head units
In reality, I’m probably the only one who’s going to notice the interference , but I tend to be anal about these sorts of things.

Found an OEM used bezel on ebay for 32 bucks, arrives tomorrow. Right now, it’s just press-fit into the space that the storage tray was.
There’s a few more on ebay under $50 too, i didn’t care a ton about the condition, since I’ll re-paint it if need be, so managed to snag a cheapo one.
