I f inally split the block of the old franken-EJ25 from my engine swap project. This came from the #2 piston, and it’s the ring that sits between the crankshaft and the piston.

Gnarly!

This answers a lot of questions about Why That Engine Sucked (trademark, copyright, etc ) .

Well... there’s going to be metal that got to other parts of the engine...

There was not a single shred of metal in the pickup filter at all. Nothing on the magnet either.

It was just... gone.

That’s pretty weird... you’d expect a few slivers on the magnet at least.

I suppose if this abrasion occurred over a long period-- they might have been swept out in the oil, but nothing???  Wow.

What are the rebuild plans?

Bearings won’t show up in a magnet. They’re made of copper and lead for the most part . Cut open the oil filter and you’ll find plenty.

interesting.  I knew the bearing faces were copper alloy but for some reason I thought the race structures were ferrous for strength.  I’ll stand corrected.  There’s gotta be metal residue... somewhere.

How does the crank surface look?

Already swapped the motor! Not going to bother with rebuilding when I’ve got a happy, healthy motor chugging away.

No visible scoring or pitting. It’s weird.
