SpaceX Starship SN3, the latest iteration of Starship test vehicles, was lost during testing at the launch site in Boca Chica, Texas. Following its transportation to the launch pad, it was prepared for a program of tests on the ground and in flight – but failed during proof testing on Friday morning. Elon Musk tweeted it may have been the result of a “test configuration mistake.”

Forgot to check the staging?

In other news, the TSA still refuses to staff SpaceX flights, saying, “you can call them spaceports all you want, but we’re not piling certain death of our  agents upon mounting COVID-19 cases until Congress authorizes a whole lot more hazard pay than is in the budget.”

This is just a terrible use of the material they’ve chosen.

Seems like a fairly risky thing to be testing in the current moment. Definitely doesn’t seem critical.

I have not been following this closely at all, so I’m net even sure what they are up to.

I think they’re trying to get to the point where they can supply ISS, which is a pretty big deal. If Russia has problems with their space program during this mess, things could go badly.

As far as I can tell, Musk fell in love with the “strength” of this stainless alloy and how cool it looked (it’s used on the Ugly Truck too) but used as a thin skin material it seems unlikely to hold up to the stresses of both take-off thrust, as well as the aero forces on ascent.  Most of the missiles-and-space design community did a collective “ahem, grab some popcorn” when Musk first showed the spiffy looking shiny rocket...

There’s been a series of catastrophic (but thankfully static) failures of the structure so far— and they’ve only been at it six months. My bet is that it’s going to take a complete re-design.

I am amused, however, by the recurrent “Hey, I meant to do that” from Musk’s tweets though.  Apparently he’s “failing forward”... and doing it a lot.

This project has baffled me from the beginning.... stainless is really a terrible material and there’s a reason iso/ortho-grid is a common structural aspect of tank and capsule design and manufacturing but Elon has avoided it.

It’s because Elon is an idiot.

Things have gone well past going badly. People should be brought home so that we can focus all our space resources on national security and infrastructure.

T his i s one of it’s a fine material but is not suitable in this application things ... He’s just got to be different. Pushing boundaries is great but so is using known engineering and design principles when it makes sense.

No personal experience with 301.   316SS, Nitronics, 17-4PH HH1150, and duplex/super duplex we use all the time - but I’m also not in aerospace .

Yeah, I didn’t complete my thought in that first sentence , stainless is great for certain applications just not where Elon’s Starship is using it . You wouldn’t want it for a launch tank. It’s used on specific a erospace tanks, see Centaur upper stag e tank and plenty of satellite tanks.

My e xperience: 10 years ae ro space manufacturing.
