So, since Ohio has been on lock down for the past couple weeks, Boy Scout meetings have been cancelled. But, since I’m part of the leadership of my sons scout troop, me and the three other leaders needed to get together and discuss upcoming plans, specifically summer camp in late June, if it happens . So, I volunteered to have a everyone come over to my place, have a meeting outdoors around my fire pit and practice social distancing. Chairs were a good 6 feet apart, discussions were had, and a few beers were consumed in a couple hours of time. Meeting accomplished.

Asshole neighbor across the street posts on Facebook how his idiot neighbor is having a “party” with his “buds”. Hey, fuck you. We’re trying to get things done so boys can, hopefully, spend a week outdoors learning useful skills and become useful members of these united states. You, on the other hand, are posting to social media what you do not understand. Seriously, fuck you. Not the Scout way, but tonight, it’s my way. Fuck you.

And your social media response was?

Social media heavily promotes disporportionate retribution. Death threats to you and your family, vandalism, and all the other usual fallout you see are a small price to pay for making an insignificant worm feel important for sixteen minutes with his virtual back-pats.

I mean... Celica.

Luckily, I’m not on social media.  One of the other leaders wives mentioned it to him and he texted us all what was being posted. I’m just sitting on my couch, SMH.  And having a scotch. Or three.

I would file this under meetings that could have been an email.

This is why Facebook sucks. It was better when assholes like that just bitched at their wife about it and let their blood pressure creep up over time.

A good friend of mine is a district executive at a Scout council down south (I spent 6 years working for the organization professionally, myself).

She related today that an angry, older volunteer blew up at her, yelling that the Scouts were part of the government conspiracy to lock down the economy and demanding to know when their Skype trainings and meetings would go back to live, he was not happy with the response of “when the government says we can” .

I feel for it, there’s overzealous crazies coming out of the woodwork on all sides of the issue right now. And just wait till they start closing camps and high adventure bases for the summer. Some states are already shut down to the middle of June, others will follow, and the date will keep slipping. Camps open in June, key staff report in May, not happening. Financially, that loss of revenue will destroy local councils.

Well, yeah. But emailed beer just isn’t the same. Plus, I got to piss off a neighbor I can’t stand. That’s a win/win in my book.

Yep. I’m giving it 50% chance that we are going to have summer camp this year. Unless things significantly improve in the next two months, which is doubtful, I can’t see many parents sending their boys (and girls now) to camp. Individual camp sites aren’t the main problem, but many troops, including ours, go to the mess hall for each meal. That’s about 100+ boys and adults in a fairly confined area. That cannot be happening in today’s Covid-19 environment. I’m hoping that the local district has enough of a cushion to survive one year of no scouts in camp. I’m hoping, but it’s going to be rough.

Stay safe.

The government will not be satisfied until we hit 0 new diagnoses and 0 new deaths, which will never happen, because this virus is now endemic and a permanent part of our life now, it won’t just go away. Every date they give us is just to prevent social unrest and keep everyone from descending into hopelessness and committing suicide, the deadline will just keep getting pushed back and pushed back. We will have to live like this for anywhere from 2 years to forever.

I’m quite surprised you’ve not canceled already . My wife’s Girl Scout camp for August was canceled a month ago.

That’s probably for the best, unless for some reason it goes viral.

I respectfully disagree with the time frame, but realize this is going to fundamentally change society for a long, long time. Very similar how the depression changed the thinking of my parents. And yes, I’m old. My parents, even older.

The most annoying part of this whole thing is the entitled “Karens” of the neighborhood being dicks to people that they perceive are not  following the recommendations.

32% unemployment and almost zero economic activity for years will make the Great Depression look like the Japanese bubble era. Hold on tight, because this ride is going to really, really suck

Totally. Four middle aged guys discussing how to get teenage boys and their parents to sign up for merit badges for scout camp was a total rage machine. All that was missing was a bubble machine. /s

It’s not up to our troop to cancel. But, we are expecting a much lower attendance then previous years. But, on the bright side, fishing would probably be excellent with fewer scouts. I could bring in an awesome bass this year.

I’m the last person to tell anyone what to do, and am not judging your decision or accusing you of being reckless.

That said, we’ve been running an entire 1-12 school for three weeks  without ever meeting once in person.

Living like this is unsustainable, so there’s no way that will happen. Worse case scenario is it turns out to be like the flu, with temporary immunity, and we can’t develop a vaccine. We ’ll have to go back to living like we did before the 1940’s, when we didn’t have a flu vaccine. Increasing populations are almost always associated with increased rates of disease, and our populations have been increasing quite steadily since the 1940s. What we’re dealing with here isn’t anything new, we just forgot hiw to deal with it.

What we've forgotten is our own mortality, people do not like getting a sudden reminder of that

It’s four grown men going against state and federal recommendations and common sense in order to drink beer and conduct a meeting that sounds like it could have been an email. You all potentially risked the health of a bunch of people to discuss merit badges. It’s Boy Scouts, not something important.

Fou r grown men who should have been obeying the lock down order but chose to ignore it and get together over beers instead of handling something over a phone call. Great example you’re setting for your troop there. Way to teach the kids social responsibility.

You and everyone like you who don’t need to follow the rules because you are “ special” are a huge part of the spread of this and are contributing to the overload of hospitals and the deaths that will happen because of it. You guys are special all right, super special assholes.
