Apparently, 3M is producing these all around the world, so it makes sense, I suppose, to keep the one here that are manufactured here.

It is. It’s also the same thing most other countries have done in terms of forbidding the export of critical medical supplies. It would be much nicer if we could work together, but it seems selfishness rules.

I spent days feeling deeply  depressed after the 2016 election. I couldn’t believe what my country had become.

I certainly don’t feel any better about it now.

It would make absolutely no sense to be exporting masks when we don’t have enough for our own medical workers. We have the most cases in the world right now.

I think every nation is going to have to look at their healthcare systems after this and fix the failings rather than pointing their fingers elsewhere.

Having universal healthcare without manufacturing to support it is not a good system.

We’re realizing some of the failings of globalism  right now.

But as the article states, 3M masks made in China that were headed to Europe are now rerouted to come to the US. So even masks made in another country are not being used by that country, they are all coming here instead. Which is, short term, good for the US, I guess, but as 3M states, bad for the overall big picture of a global pandemic.

Let’s see what 3M has to say about it :

“ earlier this week, we secured approval from China to export to the U.S. 10 million N95 respirators manufactured by 3M in China. “

First, i t’s not as simple as Dr C heeto wants to depict it. And second, what goes around comes around, being selfish in a global crisis will certainly not pay in the long run.

I’m looking forward to this all being over, but at the same time I fear for how this is all going to play out nationally and politically between countries.

On a nicer and lighter note, Germany and Switzerland has been taking French, Italian and Spanish COVID 19 patients to treat them to try and ease the pressure on the healthcare systems in those countries.

https://www.euronews.com/2020/03/28/eight-covid-19-patients-flown-from-france-and-italy-to-german-hospitals

Kinja'd!!!

In a statement , Armin Laschet, the North-Rhine Westphalia prime minister had said: “Our friends from Italy in particularity need our solidarity these days. With the admission of the patients, we want to signal: You are not alone.”

The patients were chosen by French and Italian doctors in close consultation with German hospitals which outlined what equipment they had available.

Other German states have also welcomed patients from France and Italy, the latter of which is the most heavily impacted country in the world.

Dick Move, China.

“China made half the world’s masks before the coronavirus emerged there, and it has expanded production nearly 12-fold since then. But it has claimed mask factory output for itself. Purchases and donations also brought China a big chunk of the world’s supply from elsewhere .”

I was like “LOL all these people freaking out, really??!”

Yeah, it’s even worse than they imagined. I mean, I at least held out hope that he was putting on an “ Election Persona,” which would be toned down to “Proper CEO” persona once he was actually in office. On paper, some of his plans actually read like logical steps.

Absolutely horrid. I can’t even believe that anyone can support him as a person. Not policies, necessarily, which can at least be argued over — but his personality, delivery, and rationale for almost everything he does.

I heard people saying he couldn’t do much harm, because Congress would prevent his worse excesses , or because he’d be surrounded by adults.

Even if the damage he caused were limited to the things he says, that’s still considerable, given the racism and conspiracy theories that he not-so-subtly encourages.

But the president of the U.S. has huge, largely unchecked powers when it comes to foreign policy, and it’s clear he’s being enabled, not constrained, by the GOP in Congress.

And of course now millions will die because of his ego and ignorance.

I just can’t believe twitter hasn’t been banned for public officials. I would support this. More harm than good.

Or that his entire approach to everything seems to be about “friends vs enemies” and people have to set aside all their good judgment to be a part of the former.

Jeff Sessions is running for his old Senate seat here in AL. He was hugely popular for his entire tenure before becoming AG (landslide wins every time) . Now he has a big fight on his hands because people find him disloyal to Trump. Because as we all know the AG’s main job is to be loyal the president, not to do the right thing, right?? SMH. Even when you’re a stool pigeon 90% of the time, that’s not good enough for some people.

An update to that is just yesterday Trump told Sessions to stop using his name in his campaign ads — Sessions had been doing damage control (by emphasizing his party cred) and Trump didn’t like it.

And somehow, Trump’s approval rating is going up .

I’ve heard some theories on this phenomenon.

First off, all leaders have their approval ratings go up in times of crisis, and Trump is far lower than most other world leaders in the amount of approval gained.

Secondly, for those who don’t pay close attention to the news, the fact that he’s on TV so often talking about plans is enough proof that he’s active in the process.

Thirdly, for those democrats and independents who don’t care about the news, any action by Trump can seem positive, but it is also extremely unlikely that they’ll ever vote for him.

Sessions should pull a Trump move: tell his campaign to eat it, keep using the ads until Trump sues, drag the lawsuit out to November, and agree to stop using it to settle the suit. Sessions gets the usefulness of the ad all while following the letter of the law versus the intent.

My oversimplified litmus test for a politician is “Would I work at a company where s/he was the boss?”

I’ve never said “Hell no” until 2016 . I mean, maybe also with Robert Mugabe or something.

And lest anyone think I’m just politically biased, I do consider myself a moderate conservative. I just don’t even recognize what all this mess has become with everything along party lines, no dissent.

I am not saying that we stop helping Canada, or that they don’t need the PPE for their healthcare institutions. However, there are about 12,000 confirmed virus cases in Canada vs. 265,000 in the US. Under those circumstances, it is entirely appropriate to look at prioritizing those resources for US healthcare. It doesn’t have to be all or nothing, and perhaps  we don’t have to abandon Canadian exportation completely, but if I were president and I learned of this exportation of masks, you betcha I would jump on it pronto and find out what’s going on. I wouldn’t run my mouth off about it all over Twitter before I had the whole story, though.

Absolutely not, that would be very irresponsible of your government. You have to make sure your own people are taken care of before you can help others. Your people and companies are the ones making them, you have a right to them first.

In absolute terms, less. In percentage terms which is more relevant, unknown because it’s a function of testing. Either way it doesn’t matter from our point of view.

If an d when the virus takes off in I ndia (1 bn plus and worse health system) and PPE is in short supply in America I’m guessing that the authorities there wouldn’t be keen on exporting to India even if the demand and need is much higher.
