It’s not clear that they are useless. I mean CDC apparently thinks you should (as long as you aren’t taking supplies from medical personnel):
Memos from CDC to White House lay out rationale for possible widespread use of face coverings
It seems like that got mangled in Trump’s brain: Doctors say Trump’s idea to ‘use a scarf’ to protect against coronavirus is unproven
Regardless, we can note that the countries where mask use is prevalent have done better than those where it’s not. Obviously correlation is not causation, but it probably should not be discarded out of hand.

I guess a face covering is better than nothing, BUT a face covering made from generic fabric is closer to nothing than it is to an N95 respirator/mask.

I think the goal of a fabric mask is to protect other people more than yourself. If you're talking, it keeps droplets of your saliva from getting airborne. But it certainly isn't working to filter things out like a respirator. Kind of like when you go to some doctor's offices and they ask you to wear a mask if you're sick. That's not for your benefit, it's for theirs.

Unless you are in healthcare of something where you are regularly being exposed, all masks are supposed to only be worn by the sick.
An N95 mask will filter will filter out 95% of particles 0.3 microns or larger. Generic fabric barely filters anything.
From this study it looks like IF you need to improvise something for a mask using a towel as your base material is the best option with it only allowing 60% penetration compared to 80%-100% penetration for most of the other materials tested. Compare that to an N95 mask that only allows 5% penetration. Either way you cut it though, an improvised mask is woefully inadequate compared to an N95 rated one.

“all masks are supposed to only be worn by the sick.”
I think the point is that with Covid-19, we have to work on the assumption that we’re all sick because so many people are asymptomatic at first. But we don’t want to divert masks away from healthcare professionals, which is why they haven’t really encouraged “healthy” people to wear masks up to this point.
A fabric mask isn't going to filter out much in terms of microbes. But it will stop that speck of saliva from leaving your lips and landing on someone else. Think of it like a sneeze guard at a buffet. If everyone at the grocery store wore a fabric mask, we'd be better off than if we wore no mask. Obviously, we'd all be safer wearing respirators but that isn't really feasible.

Fabric masks are not all that useful for droplets though. That’s what I am trying to explain.
From this article a “vast majority” of droplets from a sneeze are less than 100 nm in size. And the study I mentioned in the previous reply used particles in the 500 nm to 1000 nm range for their polydisperse tests which are the results I was referring to.

Not sure how that is being a dick. Creating a mask from generic fabric does very little besides make you feel like it is doing something. It’s a placebo. See the rest of my comments in this string in my discussion with Chuckles if you don’t believe me.

I’ve read all of it. There’s a lot of information out there from sources we would hope to be credible, and a lot of disagreement, but precious few N95 masks. Working nurses in my family and immediate circle of humanity asked me to make these masks, so I did. If nothing else, I hope it will make them feel better. Have a nice day!

The first batch went to my niece who is a Kaiser nurse in San Diego . I gave the bulk of my N95s to a Kaiser nurse who we go to church with and she wants some of these homemade jobs as well. These have the ability to insert an extra layer of medium in between if you want to. I have the technique down now. I’ll send you some of the next batch.

I sincerely hope it helps prevent them from getting infected, but it’s not likely to do so. Didn’t mean to come off as a dick. Sorry.

No worries, Friend, and thank you . We’re all trying to do the best we can with the information and talents and resources we have. M y skin is a little thin these days.
I’ve listened to Anthony Fauci talk about these homemade masks and if I were to summarize what I think I hear from him, bottom line, he doesn’t want to say “don’t wear them.” I am doubtful of their efficacy as well, if I’m honest. I had a stash of N95s from the Camp Fire last Fall and I gave the bulk of them to one of my nurse people who works for Kaiser in Oakland and her sister, also a nurse working at Oakland Childrens’, asked me to make some of these. And my niece, a Kaiser nurse in San Diego, asked me to make some for her.

What material did you use though? Might be worth making some new ones from towels based on that study I reference. Again, sorry for the comment. Re-reading it, yea, it comes off as being a dick. You’re just trying to help where you can .

No worries; thanks again . I’ll look at the article. To your question, I am using re-purposed cotton weave that is woven pretty tightly. (I didn’t really like the shirts the fabric came from because they didn’t breathe enough.) In the early days, like three weeks ago, word on the street was that cotton was preferable. Paper Level 1 masks are about a buck apiece on Ebay these days.
At some level, I feel a sense of responsibility to wear some sort of mask if I go out for groceries in order to protect others from whatever cooties I might be carrying.
