This is a really nice car. The seller was a really honest lady who showed up with her husband. She is desperate to sell, and admitted I am the only person who has responded to her ad. I think the problem is that only enthusiasts want manuals, and enthusiasts don’t want a minimally equipped 4 door sedan with limited power.
I drove it, and as should be no surprise because Mazda, the shifter and clutch feel were fantastic. This would be a reliable and safe vehicle that would carry him through college and grad school until he can buy his own car. Also, slow enough to keep him out of trouble.
Mom says this is the front runner, and that means it is. I haven't been married 20 years for nothing. I know the rules.

Getting
the kids into manuals is a mandate from the heavens.

Anyone would be extremely lucky to have that car. Safe. Reliable. Reasonably fun. Practical. And “nice.”
Are the panel gaps as bad in person?

Desperate to sell AND told you that you're the only who replied to the ad? Definitely an opportunity to shave sound dollars off that price here...

Learning to drive with a manual teaches a lot more about how cars drive than just swapping gears - it’s a great start.

Mama ain't no dummy. She's bang on here, that's a damn good car for the lad. If he takes care of it, it'll easily last him a decade.

I haven’t driven a 6 but everything I’ve read leads me to believe it is a good car . And that price is awesome for something so new and with that low of miles.
BUT; let me make your son’s argument for one second. Because I think; if his heart is on an ST; then the 6 won’t last him through college. In 2 years he’ll be trying to figure out how to get his way into something more exciting . Or even worse, he’ll be throwing a CAI and other silly stuff at the 6 looking for what he wanted originally.
I know young kids do dumb stuff(I did and it’s only 15-20 years ago so I remember much of it) but I’d argue you should come up with a way to really dis-incentivize dumb stuff and look at something close to an ST. The 6 is a neat car on paper and I think a lot of Oppos, having driven lots of other things, would appreciate it for what it is; but getting a 18-20 year old something they don’t really want as a gift is just asking for disagreements about the gift down the line in my opinion. The kid is showing some real car- person inclinations by wanting a hot hatch; I’d indulge some of that.

Let me know if you need any more carfax reports run. I’ve still got a few more left from the package purchased to support the great car exchange of 2020.
