News Flash: people who can afford six-figure wake boats are incredibly privileged!
pictured: not a six-figure boat
source: planetNautique forum, where someone asked about whether Nautique boat production has been, or will be affected by COVID-19, which, of course it will. (emphasis mine)
I have a custom order P25 that was scheduled to build in the next few weeks. I’m hoping that my 2020 doesn’t arrive a week before the 2021 models do. Not fun taking delivery of a new “last-years” boat. I don’t blame them for keeping things quiet, but it’s time for more info. Thanks to all! Stay safe.
Come on, homie. People are dying. “Not fun” getting a $200,000 boat - that’s going to be exactly the same as a 2021 model - a little late, because people are concerned for their lives and that of fellow citizens? I strongly suspect Nautique is not withholding information. They just don’t know.
Like I said, hardly a news flash. I couldn’t bring myself to respond in that thread because my mother always said, “if you can’t think of anything nice to say, make a burner account and really tear down a complete stranger over something trivial!”
For your time:
side note: I’m getting my boat in as soon as the ice is gone.

No, this is a GREAT time to look for a boat. Should be lots of people looking to dump them due to finances. Send links and I’ll pick them apart lol

It’s relatively warm here. Mid-60's today. Seriously contemplating taking the boat out of winter hibernation. I did see a wake surfer out this weekend. Must have had a wet suit on.

Oh, I know. But we really do NOT need a boat right now and I don’t know how often it would even be used having a 1 year old now (which is why we sold in the first place)

Heck, I thought I was extremely privileged to be buying a car only seven years old with only 100k on it for the princely sum of $4 .9k. Of course, this mindset also allows me to laugh when a friend of mine was absolutely torn up about the possibility of having to live within a few miles of a trailer park, so joke’s on all the Fancy Kristens (RIP) out there when the poors decide to build trailer homes.

Living simply doesn’t mean roughing it. Most people don’t need a massive house. I imagine that most trailer parks would have a whole lot less lunatics running around than where I grew up. You could not imagine a less likely enclave for creeps, eccentrics, hoarders, and social outcasts than a single short street in a historic suburban neighborhood.

Wow. I know I’m wired differently than these people, but I can’t imagine giving a shit about the model year. Newest vehicle of any kind for us is a 2009 Yukon which I just got 6 months ago!
Just re-did every connection in the fuel system on the WaveRaider 760. I’m ready to GO! Funny how having a properly sealed fuel system means you don’t need to prime the carbs to start it..... Also means I probably won’t blow up from a fuel leak too, so that’s nice.
I still need to re-do the carbs, fuel pump and fuel lines on the Polaris. Then I’m set for the summer. (until something else breaks....)

It’s not kicked in yet for many people. Only 3 or 4 states are getting their business by covid and the rest of the country is really only at the start of the curve. My states predicted peak is 24 days away. The peak. Things aren’t going to get back to normal well into June.
I’m not justifying this attitude but these “quit whining it’s not that bad” type s are right. It's NOT that bad right now. It will be in 2 weeks and it will be REALLY bad if you don't take it seriously now.

I mean, I think it’s a specific model that’s new for 2020, the G25 Paragon, which STARTS AT $280,950 . I guess, in any case, if you’re getting a 2020 boat right before the 2021 comes out, you’re theoretically not getting great value because the 2021's are coming, and in a few years, your boat will appear to be a year older than a competitive boat in the market. Right? But WTF does it matter at that price point. VALUE would be NOT buying the ludicrous top end model. The Paragon is already like an AMG S63 Mercedes to a “regular” S500. If you want decent *relative* value, get the S500 and not the AMG. Does that make sense? This is all assuming new, of course.
Basically this guy needs to chill out. Like, a lot. He’s not even that fired up, admittedly, but this doesn’t need to be discussed. Your boat will get here when it gets here, and it will be amazeballs regardless.

This guy is actually in Utah, interestingly enough. Lots of replies from people in other areas saying “boat ramps and parks are closed anyway, so...”
Side note, I think we’ll be fine to use our boat, because we keep it at our own private dock.

At least you can take yours out! My state is on lock down, the marina is in my state, but the boat is actually registered in DC, because DC owns the river where I am. DC is on lock down as well. So it looks like mine will be hibernating for another few months.

I bought my last boat twenty years ago as a leftover 1999. It was a 25' Mariah bowrider, and iirc we paid $30k for it . I am horrified to see how much new boats are now.

[sees comment about six-figure boat and $200,000]
[Thinks it’s exaggeration, remembering when Nautiques were pricey at $40,000 in the early 90's]
[Looks up price of new Nautique G25]
[Head fucking explodes at the sight of “star ts at” followed by $179,000]
Jesus God - I knew they were expensive and inflation and all, but for that money, it needs to be larger than a trailer boat...

I do the bike thing too. It’s been 5 years since I sold my bike. Though I think I’ll get to scratch that itch this year with no investment. My dad has a Kawasaki Vulcan that needs a slave cylinder replaced and hasn’t really been ridden. Last year he asked me if I’d want to fix it and put some miles on it...I plan on taking him up on that offer this year.

haven’t had mine out yet, but I expect I will be able to once the ice melts. No human contact required to launch it or dock it, and we dock it at a family house.

Oh, and I’m not even talking about the “regular” G25 which starts at a mere $179k. Check out the G25 Paragon, which is, I think, what this guy was talking about - it starts at $280,950.

I really don’t understand, in particular with wake boats. I did an un-scientific analysis a while ago, for a basic direct drive inboard Nautique: around 1990, they were comparable to 3-series money. Today, they’re more like 7-series money. For the basic direct-drive inboard ski boat, that is. Nevermind things like the G23 @~150k, or the Paragon the guy in the forum is looking at, which STARTS at $280k. For a 25' wake boat. I mean, I have a 2003 Super Air Nautique that was $50k new in 2003 - I bought it 17 years later for $28,500 which is some pretty amazing residual value, but when the new ones are $100k+ well.....

You’re in VA, right? Northam said you can still go to the golf courses, so I don’t see why you can’t boat. I mean as long as you have less than 10 people in your boat.

No it’ll take much longer for this to effect the rich. Those of us living paycheck to paycheck on the other hand are already sweating.
I was supposed to go back to work tomorrow after my 14 day quarantine but it’s so slow my boss told me to to come in. Thankfully the driver that works Saturday night got a DUI last weekend violated his parole and went back to jail. So I get to pick up his weekend shifts. I’m hoping I can just work full 12 hour shifts Saturday and Sunday .
If those relief checks are a real thing I might be okay but right now I’ve missed 3 weeks of work and it’ll be a looooooong time before I make as much as I was before all this. That’s the down side of working a rip job. It’s worse for waiters and bar tenders tho. At least I can still deliver food

The problem is that the marina where I keep the boat is actually a National Park. I'm not sure the lot is open as they are actively trying to close things down to keep the idiots from breathing on one another.

I figured as much, and I’m not surprised it’s closed . I’m mostly just annoyed that idiots are ruining this for everyone, and at the back and forth “guidance” that doesn’t make any sense . They’ve closed all the public parks now (at least along Georgetown Pike) , but golfing is still allowed?

They had to take the basketball hoops down and put temp fencing up at some local parks. It's silly. People seem to be taking this updated directive to stay inside more seriously. I had to get allergy meds yesterday and there were only a handful of folks out.

I definitely get what you’re saying. And if value is a REAL concern, buy used and save a shit ton of money.
For example, I’m only 3k in on (with 2 new motors and new fuel systems for both skis, new trailer tires and new lighting) my dual ski set up. Sure I could’ve went and bought 2 with a trailer brand new top end ones from Yamaha and walked out for 30-35k. But I wanted value so I bought some cheap broken ones and fixed them.
He definitely needs to chill. Totally sounds like a spoiled rich dude.

I have to believe for bartenders and waiters, even when things start to open back up, it’s not going to be the same for a long time. Our area is hugely reliant on tourism, it’s going to be a tough year for this area, I mean, years, because how many of the people who would have come here, aren’t going to now because they can’t afford to even when things open back up.

Same here aside from one plant that employs about 1000 people there’s no industry here. The next to towns north of us are even worse off. So much of our economy is tourism driven there’s more bars, restaurants, and hotels in this town than anything else.
All we can do is hope things get better by fall because October is money a huge money maker here between fall tourism and A big Apple festival. That event usually brings about 10,000 people to the area for a week or so. That’s a lot of money spent

Indeed. About 30 minutes from here is one of the largest motorcycle gatherings, Laconia Bike Week, during which some businesses make literally 90% of their annual income (or more in some cases). Also the demographic is Old Harley Dude, so, high risk population. It’s not till mid-June I think, but man, it’s stuff like that, that will ruin a lot of people’s livelihoods.

I can’t help but compare these to something like a Bentley for the lake. Not everyone with millions of dollars is doing the yacht thing - if one of their vacation homes is on a lake and money really doesn’t mean anything, well this is what you get - the very best of the best.
One thing I have always liked about the lake we’re on, is that somehow a culture has been fostered that does not support showing off how much money you have. There are billionaires driving around in beat-up 1970's aluminum Starcrafts, because they just don’t care about having a nice boat to get them to and from their island. True function over fashion, for sure.
There are some - maybe a half-dozen, 10, of these $100k+ wakeboats, but not many, on a 7,000 acre lake.

Through casual observation, old money doesn’t flaunt it garishly, and a lot of folks that have the new expensive stuff are largely over leveraged (tech windfalls, notwithstanding)
I remember during the early 2000's , dudes were driving around with new, lifted 4WD trucks, towing new Nautiques, with wave runners on overhead racks, so well over $100K worth of stuff....and I knew that all of those could not have been paid for...
