What obstacles would I face trying to buy something out of state right now?

Getting there with a friend is much harder and arguably unsafe. Notary publics are probably closed. BMV is probably closed. Anything else?

Well, there’s also the matter of sitting in a stranger’s car for several hours and hoping it’s virus-free.

I feel your frustrations, people are unloading some REALLY tempting vehicles right now for emergency funds...

Yep, and I shouldn’t be spending the money I don’t have when I don’t have to drive anywhere anyway.

Still, damn there are a lot of XJs for sale right now.

Do you live in the SW Ohio area? For the time being, Ohio BMVs are closed, but title bureaus are open. This means you can transfer an in-state title to your name BUT out of state cars cannot have a VIN inspection done and hard plates cannot be issued, period. But if you have a vehicle titled to your name, you can get temp tags for it and when those expire you can apply for hardship (extension) tags. I put the turbodiesel Jetta into storage today because I can’t get plates for it yet and I don’t want to get temp tags if I don’t have to.

Indiana. We don’t have the separation between title offices and BMV.

Sounds like the registration problem isn’t an issue, police have been instructed to lay off, although I could get pulled over without a plate.

It doesn’t really matter, there’s no way realistically speaking I’m going to gamble on a high mileage vehicle several hours away given everything going on. Just....wishful thinking.

Indiana doesn’t even notarize titles.

Lucky bastards...

They’re the same office? That makes so much sense! I bet you can order hard plates online, too.

I can renew, but don’t think I can get new ones online.

can you reach out to the owner. If its super cheap offer $ 200 more to hold it? Some sort of deposit to hold for a month?

I don’t have any confidence that things will be better in a month.

The “good” news is that when the virus does become manageable, the economy will still be in such a crappy state that if I have a job I can probably afford to find someone else desperate to sell.

You can drive it home with no plate as long as you have the signed over title.

The issue would be if you get stopped at the state border. If that’s the case, it’s a bit tougher. But the no plates thing isn’t a big deal. Especially if you’ve  got a friend to travel with.
