Does he think that you can just stop making cars on Friday and start making ventilators on Monday? They’re comp lex things and they need specialised parts. Everybody else wants these parts too so you’re going to have to source them. Sure, GM can make ventilators, just not in time for this epidemic.

Why, if Dyson can do it, can GM not manage? Why would they not be able to get it done in time? What is the time frame? This shit isn’t going anywhere.

And who knows what actually happened? GM said they would produce 40,000 ventilators by April. They then came back and said they would make 6,000 at an elevated cost. I can understand this annoying anyone, especially the infant in the White House.

Evidence that Dyson has “done it,” please. So far all they’ve shown is a couple of renderings and made big promises. Ventilators are a hell of a lot more complicated than you think, and the idea that they “designed one in 10 days” and have tooled up to build them right away is implausible as all hell.

You know what the difference is? The UK government asked for help and Dyson stepped up and came to the table with a workable design in 10 days and announced they would not be seeking any profit in the endeavor. This is the response from a vacuum cleaner company. Dys on has a market cap of $3 billion.

The US government asked GM to step up and help in the effort and the response was to hem and haw and talk cost and problems. Then they made a pledge, backed out on that pledge and caused the US government to get annoyed and step in to force the issue. GM has a current market cap of $37 billion and has enjoyed years and years of not paying taxes after the 2009 bail out. They pay minimal taxes after being saved by the Fed, continue to see huge profits during the same period and they are not paying US income taxes. For a company that is so heavily dependent upon the Federal Government helping them remain solvent, they sure seem to have a lot of push back when asked to suck it up and take one for the team.

Dyson hasn’t produced anything but renderings on a computer screen yet. Let’s see them actually PRODUCE what they say they’re going to do before you get all gloaty.

A mechanical ventilator is not something you design in 10 fucking days. That simply is not how manufacturing shit works. If they did actually do something quickly, it was very, very likely to be copying the guts of someone else’s ventilator design and putting it in their own case. You’re not going to be making ventilators out of vacuum cleaner or table fan parts.

Why are you mad at me? I’m not gloating. Frankly, it’s the opposite of gloating. This country is fucked in that we have giant subsidized manufacturing companies that, when asked to contribute to the treatment of US citizens during a worldwide pandemic that most assuredly impacts their current business, decide to force the fucking president to enact wartime legislation instead of simply starting to fucking help. My point was not that Dyson had made the 15000 machines they promised, just that a much smaller vacuum company had taken the challenge to heart and stepped up . Nobody needs to reinvent the wheel here, just manufacture ventilators.

because you’re spouting a bunch of bullshit. It’s already been said multiple times in these comments that GM was already working with Ventec on increasing production of ventilators. Then Trump decided (apropos of nothing) that they somehow were supposed to be cranking these things out by the thousands overnight (you know, because he’s an impatient baby who thinks you can get stuff instantly by demanding it loudly enough) and then acted like mean old GM “forced” him to invoke the DPA because they were “dragging their feet.” and you bought it hook, line, and sinker.

then you come in here and hold up Dyson as some sort of angel in comparison based on their implausible promises even though they haven’t produced anything but fucking hot air so far.
