At Deal Killer’s urging, I present to you my latest find. Many of you post about fancy scotches and bourbons, but my focus is more on cheap-n’-cheerful most of the time.

With that in mind, I asked the fine folks at Goody Goody for a whiskey that was not quite drink-out-of-a-bag-at-the-bus-stop cheap, but close. This is what they recommended: Hobble Creek blended whiskey. This bottle was $7.29. My previous go to was Seagrams 7, a decent blend that you don’t feel guilty using for mixed drinks, but is good enough to sip alone. Compared to that, Hobble Creek is darker, with a more overtly smokey , musty taste, and a definite sweetness I’m not usually accustomed to . I find I like it. I’ll buy it again.

In the meantime, I broke out the regulation issue hip flask and took it out to the patio today to do my Zoom meetings with Scooby at my side. The one thing about remote work is you can day drink and your department head can’t smell the liquor on your breath during your meeting.

Slainte friends!

I’m mostly dry these days (there were concerns, not altogether unwarranted, that my drinking habits were unhealthy), but something about this lockdown is making me want to drink, even though honestly my life isn’t that different. Not whiskey though, a bit too much Jack in college has left me with a general distaste (something that’s never happened with other beverages I’ve over-imbibed ). Right now I’d go with a brandy I think.

So compared to Seagram’s (my go-to mixer as well, especially at about $17 for near 2L, pair it with a your soda/pop/ginger ale/ect. of choi ce ), which would do you prefer?

How’re you liking the Zoom sessions so far? One of my friend’s is taking advantage of it by enjoying Vodka/Lemonade during our thermal-fluids sessions haha. They sure can’t smell it, but drink enough and they’ll hear it! :p

I firmly believe that Jack is the absolute worst whiskey at it’s price- point and maybe worse . It’s just awful and overrated liquor with name recognition that anyone who’s seen Epic Meal Time back in the day will recogni ze .

I can totally believe that. Unfortunately, better whiskeys tend to be “close enough”.

Everyone has that certain drink. Mine is Bailey’s Irish Creme from a bad incident in freshman year.

I also have a decent cognac I picked up. I also keep some blackberry brandy for colds and sore throats. It’s an old  family remedy that really works.

That’s unfortunate. Or maybe not, who knows. Brandy isn’t bad, and it seems to taste better at a much lower price than whiskey.

This is a deeper, more “overt” taste, if you know what I mean. I haven’t mixed it yet, but I think I like them equally for drinking alone. I’ll have to see how it works in a mixed drink. Some things, like a decent bourbon I bought once, have too much character of their own to play well with others. In that regard, the Seagrams is safe. It’ll mix with anything.

We’re using Zoom for e- learning and also for proctoring tests. About that part I’ve been a little skeptical, even though I was the one who came up with the idea. We have an exam tomorrow. I hope it goes smoothly.

Thanks!  My brother got it for me. I use it when we go around the neighborhood with the kids for trick or treat. And now this.

As much as I love the idea of wh iskey, I just can’t stomach it. Closest thing I can manage is American Honey or Southern Comfort.

Thanks for the tip. I’ll have to look for it at my local liquor store.

I understand. Different tastes for different folks. Southern Comfort may be sold with the other whiskeys,  but I see it as an entirely different beast. My dad’s holiday punch is the only thing I use it for. I find it way too sweet to sip much.

It’s more of a whiskey flavored liqueur . I like it with ginger ale if I’m not drinking it neat.

I could see it with ginger ale.

Those are way to sweet for me to even sip . They need to be dil uted/mixed with something in my experience.

So it’s more of a “ bourbony” taste; not as smooth as Seagrams. Interesting, I’ll have to pick up a bottle to try sometime . I don’t think Seagrams can be bad with anything, it’s the S wiss army knife of blended whiske y.

This is surprisingly smooth. But yeah, it’s kind of like that. Agree about Seagrams.
