Forget the federal government, I just got a $2800 check from my health insurance. It’s not entirely clear why though, so maybe I should be expecting a $2800 bill from some provider, and they paid me rather than provider?

The big one is the expanded unemployed insurance for independent contractors, which would be for up to 4 months and up to $600 a week.
This is on top of any State un em ployment insurance, many of which are considering adding gig workers to the insurance for the first time.

Based on 2018 income tax reports. So, you made $150k in 2018 and got laid off recently , you get nothing (other than unemployment). They should have sent everyone money and clawed it back when you file if you made too much. Too many corner cases where people needing help, won’t get it.

We had this happen back in December:
M y wife gets a monthly infusion for a medical condition. We switched to a new infusion center in November, all seemed good, and then in December we get a mystery check in the mail for like $12,000. Turns out the new place actually has separate practices, incorporated individually, under the same roof and they sent the bill out on the wrong letterhead. So the insurance company gets it and goes “WTF? This isn’t who we normally deal with, they aren’t even in our provider network!” And the check was basically their way of saying “This is what we normally pay, we have no idea who these people are or what they charge, so just take this and figure the balance out yourselves. ”

While I get it that they need to have some kind of baseline resource of income , the fact that it’s based on 2018 taxes screws anyone who lost their job in 2019 (or recently because of the virus-related downturn)
Extended unemployment benefits help there, but I still feel there is a gap.
This also gives anyone who got a bump in 2019 to over $75k a pass, since they can delay filing a return until they get their check.
I’m nitpicking, but WHERES MY MONEY???? /s

No sure, my guess is an average based on their last years tax returns, which is what they are doing for the stimulus checks.
Also banks statements of compensation for the last few months if they want to check it further.

The P ost says it’s based on 2019 taxes, which is better but still misses the point.
They do have expanded unemployment of $600/month for four months, which helps people who have lost their jobs recently somewhat, but still isn’t great.

I thought it was on 2018 taxes. 2019 taxes aren’t done so how do they even know?
It doesn’t mean anything for my family or most people I know, though. U nless you own a home you bought 20+ years ago, you really can’t live in King County on less the cutoffs in this bill . It’s a huge windfall for my family that lives in a cheaper metro with a cheaper house that they should be close to paying off, though. But then again, for it to have an appreciable effect where I live, it’d need to exceed a typical mortgage payment, and even if I got the maximum my family could get it wouldn’t be that much.

That’s truly huge. The rapid increase in the gig economy has left a lot of people without a real safety net.
But a lot of us did/do it for the money. It often pays substantially more than we’d make in traditional employment.

Absolutely and it can go a long way in helping get back on their feet. 4 months of compensation would be a big deal in these times and in the long run help the economy as a whole.

This is my last day of freedom. We’re trying to reduce our risk of catching it , so we’re trial running keeping our 16-month-old home. It’s a balancing act between the risk of him catching something from the nanny share family (which I think is fairly low, since they’re almost as cautious as us) and the disruption to our lives that comes from trying to keep him busy while trying to work half days during business hours.

I already have, not that it would have changed anything, but you’d think they’d use a standard yardstick instead of whichever was newest. Easiest to just use the ones that are definitely completed (since a lot of people extend, extend, extend ) .

This should have taken into account who was actually affected, not just 2018 taxes. For instance, let’s say I made less than Mr. JoeyJoeJoe in 2018, who made $100,001 . Today, I still have a job but Joey lost his three weeks ago. I will get $1,200 bucks and Joey will get zero, even though Joey is all but certain to make less than me this year because he won’t find a new job until May, and who knows if it will pay nearly as good as his last one.

Nope - it’s $600 per week for 13 weeks, per NPR and a bunch of other sources I’ve read: https://www.npr.org/2020/03/25/821514231/whats-in-it-for-you-1-200-checks-13-weeks-of-unemployment-payments-and-more
I’ve never been so relieved in my life. I still can’t find a job and after getting sick last month, I was hoping to dig myself out of the hole with some features...about Sebring. Which didn’t happen. Unemployment benefits decrease dramatically whenever I do work, so weeks where I can only get one or two short articles in and then end up with half my unemployment benefits really hurt.
A
ll of my full-time
job prospects disappeared overnight right when I thought I might finally be getting somewhere. Optimism: Never do it, not even once. I’m back to being the leftover useless
piece of crap that no one wants,
I guess. Always in the wrong place at the wro
ng time. I wish I didn’t need this. I also kinda wish I didn’t exist at this point. Nothing ever even
goes fine for me,
and it certainly never gets
better. I’m just here to suffer, I guess.
I just hope it comes soon.

*hugs* I’m sorry to hear all of that, Stef.
Things can and do get better. I know it doesn’t seem, look, or feel like it now, but they do. The dot-com crash left me in a similar situation and the series of lifeline UI extensions, small gigs, and living with my parents was how I ended up getting through that period . A little echo recession in tech a few years later (when things were looking up) left me unemployed and homeless briefly before I ended up, once again, moving in with my parents. Eventually the gigs just kept coming until I was picking/choosing, turning many away, and I eventually landed a full-time job...
My hope is that the government comes up with a safety net for the many of us that have for various reasons gone into freelancing. These piecemeal solutions that only come after you’ve been stressing how you’ll pay the bills is not good for anyone.

Yeah. I’m in the picking and choosing part category right now, but to be honest, why the hell does no one choose me for a full-time job? It’s so depressing when everyone else who’s left here seems to land on their feet, yet I’m the one who gets asked “have you considered other jobs in other industries?” as if I’m just bad at this one. So few people who offered to help find me what I’m looking for are actually doing that.
I just don’t know what the hell is wrong with me and why I’m everyone’s last choice for anything. It’s like no one wants me around in a meaningful, long-term way.
I’ve been on unemployment so long that it looks like those benefits will run out before the end of this year, at which point I won’t even have that safety net. I spend a lot of time wishing I didn’t exist lately
.
