Gauge Cluster Layout?

I am in the process of laying out the new gauge cluster for the El Camino and I’m trying to determine which gauge should share the high profile spot between the tach and speedometer? I thought I could fit two small gauges in the center, but it turns out there isn’t enough room. So, my options for the middle spot are water temp, oil pressure, or fuel level. I will be removing the radio and installing a delete panel in its place. In that panel I can mount the gauges that don’t make it to the cluster plus the controls for the hidden Bluetooth amplifier. I will also be m ounting the Holley Sniper display someplace within eyesight and it will should AFR, rpm, coolant temp and some other info. Any suggestions on gauge placement?

I could also do the layout above, but the gauges in the lower spots will be difficult to see.

Boost, obviously!

It’s an NA Gen 1 small block. No boost, unfortunately. Though I do have a manifold vacuum gauge on it. I was planning on moving that to the other car with the carb though.

Do you know about Project Binky on YouTube? Somewhere between Ep 25 and Ep 30, they’ll sort the dash. You might be able to get some ideas from them.

I think the tach should be bigger and right in the middle. The other gauges can so to hell.

Go full racecar - Tach in the middle, rotated so your shiftpoint/redline is vertical. Put important info on either side (oil temp, oil pressure, coolant temp, battery voltage). Screw everything else, it’s not important.

I would put fuel gauge in the middle to keep it classic. Second choice would be oil pressure.

I would say oil pressure or fuel.

I recommend water temp I’m the center. It’s the gauge I most look at besides tach/speedo. Pretty sure I don’t need to go into all the reasons why you’re looking at the coolant temp. Fuel is good but a quick glance elsewhere when stopped at a light is easy. Unless you’re expecting high battery draw, volt meter is a rare one for me too.

Good luck, I miss  my 84 Elco.

Yeah, I need speed too. I plan on driving this car a bunch. I do like the idea of the large tach in the center though.

Fuel gauge gets my vote.

The only reason I have the voltage meter is because it came with the oil  pressure and water temp gauges. Bought all three on ebay for $60, which was a good deal as the small gauges retail for $90.

Just because it’s NA now doesn’t mean it has to stay that way!

Either temperature or oil pressure as you have it laid out (if the computer has temperature displayed probably oil pressure up front so it’s not exceedingly redundant).

Is there room to move the two big gauges closer together and get one or two on the outside edges? Maybe get the small ones into the corners and the speed/tach nearly touching in the middle? Just a thought, you’ve probably already tried and found it not to fit.

Another option would be tach far left, speedo in the middle, and two stacked smaller gauges on the right? That would let you have temp and oil pressure readily visible, with voltage and fuel level (not as vital at short-notice) elsewhere.

Gen I SBC? I’d have to go with water temp or oil pressure in the middle - if possible, both. But my Elky has a tired old 305 on which both of those readings are always points of concern. :) The lower outboard sections of the dash panel look like great places for more gauges, but I know visibility in those spots is poor.

Do your warning lights work / do you WANT them to work?  If no to either, you could always chop out that section and put gauges there.

Nice, I’m not questioning the need, I just don’t think you’ll get as much use out of it compared to coolant temp and oil pressure is pretty useful as well but since you’re not running boost, it’s not as critical as coolant temp, IMO.
