I’m on an hour call so I decided to do a quick project that I have had laying around FOREVER.

My 80gb 5th gen iPod classic has a nearly beat battery and a failing hard drive. It still works, but when I tried to use iPod rip to get all of the music off of it, it failed. After that I went ahead and bought a new battery, a 128 gb sd card, and an !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .

I’m really good at working with small things, but I took my time opening the iPod as it has NEVER been out of it’s case and is still mint. 7 minutes later...

Old battery pops out, new one goes in (I used the same adhesive, just heated it a little first). Plug the battery into the board and the iFlash (not pictured) into the HD cable, SD card in slot. Done. iTunes is loading up now. Impressed/bummed at how easy this was. The iFlash solo is very well designed.

Happy Tuesday!

Interesting.  I still have one of these bumming around in the Volvo somewhere but never feel super inclined to use it...

Holy shit those used actual hard disks for that long? I thought it was just the original iPod that did that.

My 20GB iPod used to have frequent HD issues, but opening it up, removing the hard drive, giving it a little shake, and reconnecting tended to fix it for a few months, so I was in there a good number of times. Been over a dozen years since I retired that though.

All the original ones used actual hard drive disks, that is up to the ones they quit making in 2015.

Same and betting I still don’t lol. Maybe I’ll just put the music I can’t live without on it and put it in a Faraday  cage. So I can break it out, B ook of E li style if I have to.

You can also buy an ssd that’s a direct replacement for the hdd. Either way your ipod is going to be way faster.

It was a legacy design; the iPod touch was the only iPod to get flash.

I miss my old 30gb iPod. A funny thing happened. In 2010, it, my Garmin and cheapie digi camera were all stolen out of my car. And there was exactly one obvious solution.

But I still miss it because actually the library browsing was better than the iPhone has ever been and iPhone still can’t do absolutely perfect gapless playback.

It actually wasn’t that bad to take apart.
