1961 Oldsmobile Starfire

Kinja'd!!!

1951 Lockheed Starfire

Update: WilliamsSW had to be a party pooper and tell me that the car is actually a Ninety Eight, not a Starfire, since the Starfire only came as a convertible. I’m sure he’s right, but I wi ll duly note his objection yet continue to roll with the theme because cars and airplanes are cool.

Which now makes me wonder, how many cars were named after airplanes?

First one is a Ninety Eight, not a Starfire.

The 61 Starfire was a convertible only.

One of them is overselling the SPACE AGE STYLING a tad, and it ain’t the jet fighter.

Okay, so I looked it up. The 61 Starfire was only a convertible, but they made a hardtop from 62 onward. Still, this is pretty clearly a 61.

I have to admit though, maybe because it’s what I grew up with, but the ‘77 actually looks better.

I knew it as the Monza, and I thought it was ugly back then. But that’s why we have so many flavors of ice cream. Not everybody likes chocolate.

That question is a bit muddied if you consider that some of them probably weren’t named specifically after a plane, but share the name because Rule of Cool. Still, here’s what I’ve found so far:

Dodge Dakota (C-47)

Buick Wildcat (F4F)

Ford Thunderbolt (P47)

Mercury Marauder (B26)

Plymouth Barracuda (Fairey Barracuda)

Chevy Vega (Lockheed UC-101 Vega)

Triumph Hurricane (Hawker Hurricane)

Dodge Hellcat (Grumman F6F)

Jowett Javelin ( Gloster Javelin)

Bristol B lenheim car ( Bristol Blenheim aircraft)

Bristol Britannia car ( Bristol Britannia aircraft)

Bristol Brigand car ( Bristol Brigand aircraft )

Holden Torana car ( GA-6 Torana aircraft)

Ford (Canada) Meteor ( Gloster Meteor )

Ford (UK) Corsair (Vought F4U)

Olds Cutlass (Vought F7U)

Sorry! I happen to be a big fan of the original Starfire (first two generations). They’re great cars, with decent performance and plenty of early 60s luxury- and they’re not expensive. So I spend way too much time unnecessarily shopping for them. There’s one near me that they’re asking $19k for and it’s a gorgeous red 64 convertible.

Most 60s Oldsmobiles are currently far cheaper than their Pontiac or Chevy counterparts, despite being more luxurious and better performing than all but the highest end Chevys and Pontiacs.   Combination of a dead brand and a crappy transmission (the Roto Hydramatic in the 61-64 cars)

I knew something was up when I saw it - and it has the roofline of a 61 C body (Starfire was a B body). Zoom in and you can actually read the “Ninety Eight” on the front fender.

Well, you’ve done all the legwork. I just made a separate post about this. And no, there’s no requirement that they be named after one or the other, just that they share the same name.

Now, get busy posting pictures!
