so I checked the oil and it was fine. That fear was from the leaking oil pan. So I then started up the van. It started normal but definitely had a different sound to it. The CEL flashed for a little while before going steady. While in park, I gave it a little gas. Revs rose fine but when I released the gas, they dipped to almost stalling and then rose back to normal. I did that a couple times and said f-it and went in for a beer.

If the van's a rockin', don't bother knockin'.

could be a failed coil pack. If it idles OK but won’t accelerate without a lot of shuddering... happened to my Honda at ~250k

True story: My 2001 Outback once  managed to run on what appeared to be 1 cylinder without throwing a CEL.

Sounds like a vacuum leak.  Do cars still get those?  Though I guess that doesn’t usually cause a flashing SEL...

It’s a Subaru, the CEL bulb was probably burnt out.

flashing CEL is almost always “repeated misfire.” which would align with the vibration complaint. note that the code won’t necessarily point you towards what’s causing the misfire, only that one keeps happening.

The flashing is to get your attention in case the misfire is causing raw fuel to reach the catalyst, which can melt it down.  it’s possible the misfire is due to lack of fuel, but until you see what codes are in there you won’t know.

Check for cracked intake boots after the MAF if it has one. Though getting the code pulled would be best if auto parts stores are still open locally

Did you check the vibrator relay under engine?

havn;t done that yet cuz its cold raining dark and super shitty out.  I replaced the cat about a month ago.  what are the chances that has anything to do with it.

so?  if you have a misfire which means raw fuel is being sent down the exhaust, it’ll overheat the cat and melt it down.  how old it is has nothing to do with anything.

i’m wondering if the cat has anything to do with whats going on. i dont really see how it could tho unless maybe there was a big blockage.  I dont think there were any O2 sensors or anything . I wasn’ t think that it was new so it couldn’ t get hurt.

If the guts blew out of the cat, they could potentially be plugging the muffler.  I had that happen to me once.
