I thought in my head.
There were hundreds of people here. Normally this place sees 10 cars at most at any given time. Its a neat place and its outside and the weather is nice but I thought given how remote it is and what a pain it is to get to that we wouldn’t have to deal with crowds. NOPE!
here it is for reference. To give you an idea of how remote...its 10 miles down a dirt road, 10 miles away from the nearest facility which is the promentory test range where they test fire rockets. A facility necessarily far far away from people.
Speaking of rockets, our first stop on this adventure was Northrup Grumman’s (formerly ATK, Formerly Thiokol, formerly hercules ) rocket garden.
Then we had a picnic there, see?
Check out that social distancing!
Turns out rockets are big. This is an aft section of a SSMB (S pace Shuttle M ain B ooster)
An entire SSMB is in the background and it’ s SO much bigger than it looks in pictures. is big boi.
and yet...
Yeah, rockets are big.
Here is another picture of the booster with mini Slim Pickins in the foreground
After the rockets we went to see if the golden spike national recreation area was open.
Nope.
Still pretty and neat.
Off to the world’ s most crowded middle of nowhere road.
Really pretty place.
Kids had a great time. Video here

Lots of friends/acquaintances on my wife’s FB and Insta feeds taking selfies with groups of friends on hiking trails and camping, etc. ... Poor form considering our state has the most deaths thus far I believe. We have been invited to three house parties this past week as well. People either a) not taking this seriously, or b) thinking because they’re young/whatever that they won’t get sick so they don’t need to take personal responsibility in not helping spread it because wooo extended involuntary vacation?

I’ve heard of that place! I can’t remember where I saw something about it, but they talked about the construction.
In a few millennia , people are going to treat it as some religious artifact or place for concentrating the Earth’s energy or some other new age BS.

We aren’t shelter in place yet, just groups of no more than 10 which is why we only asked the one friend to come. That being said, I’ve heard some monumentally dumb stories like this. We are being pretty cautious still. We took the lonely beach approach to the jetty instead of fighting it out on the main trail and stayed apart for lunch for example.

I’m blessed that there are no parking areas in my neighborhood and my neighborhood is mostly older folk. M y corner of our local mountain park is empty. Gonna put in some biohazard sign posts just make sure it stays that way.

They should jeep closing state parks and city parks. People driving by the hundreds to state parks to “exercise” is a joke. People treating this situation like an opportunity to get outside and walk around is baffling to me. Every expert recommends the exact opposite of that behavior. Stay inside and limit contact. Flatten the curve. Nobody has advocated picnics as a solution.

a friend invited me over to his house like seconds after talking about all this stuff. That worried me a bit. this is Seattle, we should not be hanging out for a good long time.

Even the mountain near my house (on my MTB I just ride it from home via trails I’ve made that connect to it) - it’s completely unmarked and I never see more than 2-3 cars on the roadside at the “trailhead” - had 9 cars there on Saturday.

Dude they closed all our beaches and parks because out of towners came in and invaded Pt. Reyes .

My art history professor was super excited to introduce us to Spiral Jetty, especially since I guess it had gone underwater for a while and had then reemerged as the level of the lake changed.
It’s a bit sad that Promontory isn’t actually connected to the rail network anymore, but I guess it’s true that the causeway made that segment pretty obsolete. IIRC they finally ripped up the rails during WWII when that metal was badly needed (though I think it was late in the war, so I wonder if they didn’t go after it right away so it would be harder to block trains to the west coast with sabotage.)

I agree generally. That being said, if you aren’t being asked to shelter in place, I think its probably important to get your kids out as much as possible in as safe a way as possible before its not an option. In the end, there were fewer people here than at a grocery store and far less densely packed...but it was a TON for this area.

If you maintain distance, it seems pretty low risk, and good for people’s health in general. I think some parks have dropped admission fees though, which is probably bad, you don’t want to encourage crowding.

I had to send an email this morning to my band mates with the rhetorical question: Do you guys think we should cancel practice this week?

I did go to the furthest and least visited area, I don’t know what the closer ones were like but it probably wasn’t good. I don’t think the beach I went to was the cause of the ban, there were people but they were spaced out. I think it must have been a lot worse at others. There is a place to surd off the coast on a sand bar but it isn’t always on, have to take a boat out there!

Yeah, true.
Interesting place to look at the curvature of the Earth, by the way. I’m always amazed at how much that curve really is.

We’re quickly getting to the point where there are so damned many people that it is impossible to do social distancing. Maybe Thanos was right....

I was disappointed to see the crowds, we specifically bypassed closer hikes and areas to avoid the problem. so did everyone else. We’d drive almost 2 hours to get here though so we made the most of it while staying smart about it.

They have a Saturn V at the Kennedy Space Center hanging up where you can walk underneath it. It’s big.

yeah, it doesn’t come through in pictures, you need to literally crawl around them to get a sense of scale.

I’ve been trying to use this line for as long as I’ve lived here, regardless of quarantine.

This has been an issue especially out here in Oregon on the coast as well. Small communities with very little medical services and not too many stores even as is , with a huge portion of retiree residents. Folks from Portland and other places inland coming to the beach like it was just a regular beautiful weekend overrunning the places. I’m sure many of them had good intentions thinking it won’t be too crowded, because it’s the beach, and everyone else is staying home! But of course too many people thought this clearly.
