Sorry to hear that and I hope you stay safe and relatively sane. Any further details you can share? My parents are there (since weeks before stuff got weird, and they’re scheduled on the earliest direct flight out they could get once it did, but they’ve still got a few days before that).

They should be OK provided they’re in Auckland or can get here in the next 48 hours. There are still international flights running - freight to move and Kiwis to repatriate - so if they’ve got a booking it’ll most likely be honoured, give or take any confusion as things move to lockdown. But midday Wednesday internal flights will be moving to essential personnel only and there will be some sort of res tri ction on road travel (as yet unspecified).
Worst case, if they’re stuck here, I bet hotel rooms are real cheap about now :-)

On ly if I can be th ere for the first season - it got throat-slittingly boring after that. I’m actually only about half an hour f ro m the beach and town where they filmed that.

What it’s good later too, it’s hilarious when Woody gets his daughter. I’m from Hawaii but I would live in NZ if I could pick.

I appreciate you taking the time to answer, thank you. They’re somewhere between Wellington and Auckland, road tripping in a rental car . They have accommodations reserved but I’m not sure what they are exactly other than that they’re not planning to be in Auckland till the day of their flight on the 27th—the first direct to the US they could get on . At this point, only a few days out, I have to assume the flight will be OK since it was booked relatively recently , as long as they’re flying at all—last I heard the plan was to stop international flights on the 29th but I’d love to know if you’ve heard different. They have been loving it there and would be inconvenienced but OK, other than probably forcing my dad’s retirement earlier than expected, if they got stuck. Thanks again for any advice!

Somewhere along Hawkes Bay tonight , a restaurant in the process of closing down took them in for dinner and then supplied them with leftovers and wine to keep them going for a day or two since they’re at a loose end. Thank you and your kind countrypersons for being good to a couple of nice older people doing their best to enjoy your country and get home safely. I’ve donated in their honor to one of the restaurants in my neighborhood that is doing the same for the industry community and the local elderly population right now.

I’d suggest they change their plans and get up to Auckland in the next couple of days. I get the strong impression that the government hasn’t actually figured out the details themselves yet, but it’s not impossible they’ll lock down intercity travel completely - there’s certainly been mention of getting the military out to support police, and roadblocks would be an obvious application. They’re not going to have a lot of fun doing tourist stuff once everything’s shut anyway.
I haven’t heard international flights are stopping. T here’s been a huge level of flight cancellations, but Air New Zealand’s website will still let me book a ticket to LAX for next month (unless it was going to throw me out at the payment point - I wasn’t THAT curious). Plus they’re advertising the fact that airfreight will still be moving, and ANZ don’t have dedicated freight aircraft, which means passenger planes will still be moving. I don’t kn ow the situation with the US carriers though.
If they get trapped here and need help for any reason, ping me in this thread and I’ll be happy to help if I can.

Do you know what restaurant it was? I have friends and family in Hawk es Bay, and that sort of behaviour deserves passing on to people who can reward them later ( if they’re still in business when normalcy returns).
