[Update] I bought a drive kit and !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

You’re looking at the starter for a Kohler SV735-0016 twin. For those not familiar with this starter, the small “washer” below the gear is threaded on the inside. When the starter is energized, the shaft spins counter-clockwise and the washer pushes the gear up to engage with the gears on the flywheel. There is no direct connection between the starter shaft and the starter gear. Instead, there’s supposed to be a rubber piece that is smooth on the bottom and slotted on the top to mesh with the gear. It transfers the rotational force of the washer to the starter gear. The remnants of that part can be seen in the picture.

Kinja'd!!!

Age and heat did it in. We knew something was horribly wrong by the screeching noise it was making when it was last started. The rubber piece had split, managed to get wedged between the washer and the starter body, and was holding the gear against the underside of the flywheel. That’s why the top of the gear is somewhat polished. There’s also supposed to be a cap on the top of the shaft which contains a spring to push the gear back down after starting. Clearly, that’s missing too.

Kinja'd!!!

Now I have a conundrum. I can buy an OEM starter for around $180. I can buy an aftermarket starter for as low as $70. Or I can go really cheap and buy a drive rebuild kit for about $25.

Kinja'd!!!

I hate to see everything replaced when all I really need is the rebuild kit. However, replacing the whole starter is simpler and guarantees that it will work.

Decisions, decisions.

The rebuild will be more fun I think

Ever so slightly more complicated, so perhaps more fun . The only hard part will be the c-clip and that is readily accessible so it shouldn’t be a big deal at all.

Hm, how do you pop that out? A small flat blade screwdriver? I’m used to circlips/e-clips with holes or tabs to pop them out.

I would order two rebuild kits. It is a very common problem. It’s is going to happen again. The electric motor should be fine. Just make sure the c clip doesn’t launch across the room and disappear.

Rebuild it. To put the new c-clip, place the clip on top the shaft and drive it in with a socket that can fit on the shaft. A dd some grease on the shaft after. Looks like it could use it.

I don’t do it often, but I’ve been successful with a pair of pliers and something solid to brace against the ends of the c-clip.

Across the room? Try across the lawn. :)

Maybe I should put down a large tarp just in case.

Good idea. The shaft is completely dry. Who knows how long it’s been that way. It’s not exactly a maintenance item!

Thus the username! We already have lots of growth. I managed to get the tractor started one last time to mow the front lawn and move my  trailer. I had to mow the back lawn with the push mower. We are now fully into spring, so mowing will be a weekly chore once again.

I’ve seen someone (attempt) mowing/mowblowing their driveway after a snowstorm.

I think those shafts are supposed to be dry, putting grease just makes it jam up from dirt faster.

The starter on my Toro snowblower had trouble getting the gear to fly up and I think it’s because the flutes on the end of the shaft are worn off.

Ma ybe so. It does only see intermittent use and the return spring is housed under a protective cap . Now I’ll have to call the local lawn repair guy and see what he has to say. I planned to call him to see if I could get the parts locally. He may be a bit higher, but it would save me a few days and shipping costs. Plus he can provide free advice!

If it is easy to pull the starter motor I would get the cheap one or rebuild.  If it is a royal pain (I can't imagine it would be, garden stuff is still pretty simple under the hood) maybe go factory.

As someone who runs an independent small engine repair shop I feel your qua ndry.

Ten years ago I would suggest the OEM unit. Not an to more. Kohler has outsourced so much of their stuff to Chinese manufacturers that the premium of the OEM is not worth any headache you would have getting OEM warranty on it.

I don’t see problems with the rebuild kit at all if your motor still spins correctly. I’d go that route(on my own) or th e aftermarket (on a customer’s unit. I charge $7 5\hour and Mark parts up 25% so it would likely be the most economical route. I f not the rebuild is an option. Once I did both so the customer had a spare).

Also, as an independent shop, I buy so many of my parts off eBay or Amazon. Quick free\inexpenzive shipping compared to other online dealers. I have dealer accounts places, but the shipping costs and lead times can kill the savings....

Yes they should be dry. Use a dry graphite powder if anything.

It’s easy enough to pull. Two bolts and  a single nut for power. I think I’m going to see what the local parts guy has available tomorrow morning.

Thank you for the feedback! I’m going to give the local small engine repair guys a call in the morning to see if they have the parts on-hand. I know in this age of just-in-time delivery, many places don’t keep an inventory. But you never know! I like to use local guys when I can to help keep them afloat, especially in this situation.

I have the Kohler S V710. Same issue. I used an aftermarket starter from eBay . It’s been fine. If I had known about the rebuild kits, I would’ve done that.

Thanks for the feedback. I thought an aftermarket one would be fine since they are low-use items, but it’s nice to hear feedback from someone with direct experience.

You’re welcome. Age info: I think the tractor is like 10 years old and the damn Kohler starter failed in like 2 years. The off-brand one has been in service for 8 years.

Pretty annoyed when it failed since I got that model for the “Kohler” name. I see the other comments here about Kohler parts quality. oh well.

Exactly. The real solution here, is to drop in a small block Chevy.

I’m not sure how old this tractor is. I inherited it about three years ago and who knows how long my mom had it before then.

A third option might be to pay the local small engine shop to repair the starter for you. Probably how I’d go because no experience in that arena and because support a local business.

Do you have any experience with the Honda 900-watt suitcase generator? Mine has a feature on it where it throttles down when there’s little or no load. I’ve had it more than ten years and I take it out of the shed and run it a couple times per year. Last time, I took it out and ran it under a load and I got the indication that I’d overloaded it, and at that point, it began running funkily. I took it to the local lawn mower shop and the guy rebuilt the carburetor, but it doesn’t throttle down like it used to when no load. Thoughts?

In the 2000w ones I’ve worked on that is cont role d by a tiny solenoid. And also relies on linkages working properly. My guess would be a solenoid adn\or linkage issue

The best way to get experience is to do  it myself. I’m going to see if the local shop has the parts I need. I can support them by buying from them.
