Since most of us are stuck inside anyway and could use more addictions , here’s an incredibly detailed look at the history of Rogue-like games.

Been playin’ this game since about ‘86 . Novell had a multiplayer version for network play called Snipes (I think). A good m odern version for Android is Pixel Dungeon that I still play. There are many incarnations of this game. http://www.roguebasin.com/
Back with the original version, there were 1200 people playing it where I worked. In a year, no one had gotten past the 18th level. I beat the game by going in with a hex editor (I was an Assembler programmer, after all.) and changing all the monster damage to 0. Still took a few more attempts because there could be so many monsters packed around me that I starved to death before killing them all. All the programmers gave me credit while the others hollered that I cheated. Still I won, in the spirit of Kobiashi Maru!
The other phone game I play is Drug War. Stupid but a good time waster...

I played a couple of networked, ASCII games in 1988-89 at Purdue: one was called Hunt, IIRC, and was enormously fun. The goal was to shoot (or stab in an emergency) everyone around you; as you accumulated ammunition (without dying) it became more powerful, and if you managed to gobble enough of it you could unleash a nuclear weapon that would wipe out half the board.
The downside, of course, is you had to make sure no one was about to step in front of you and interrupt the nuke’s trajectory, causing you to blow yourself up. As I recall walls (it was a maze layout) could also heal over time, again risking nuclear self- annihilation if a wall popped up at the wrong spot.
There were slime blasts too that would spill through the maze. Just an amazing amount of fun with nothing but telnet and ASCII.
I’ve never been able to reconstruct what the other game was. I only played it briefly, but it was some sort of empire-building exercise, players were trying to find attractive mining locations, but that’s about all I can remember.
