just had my first internet group meeting. The best part about it is that I dont have to sit in an hour of traffic to get home.
oh pro (a mat eu r ) tip: even if you are not looking at your web cam, people can still hear you. Luckily only my boss was connected when I said ‘H oly shit, yea that guys is a drunk’

That would be a bad car to have to sit in an hour of traffic. It’s pretty for the other drivers to look at though.
Think they’ll keep up the internet meetings after this dies down eventually?

that meeting was perfectly fine being held online. I hope some of it remains like that how ever some if it does work better in person

I think the most entertaining thing I’ve heard on a group call like that was someone getting up, and peeing. There were probably a dozen of us on the call, and one of the other guys and I were chatting via Slack on the side. We both heard rather distinctly someone urinating into a toilet, then flushing it. I’m guessing someone was working remotely, and forgot to mute themselves.

I pretty much always mute my mic unless I expect to speaking a lot. Way to easy to accidentally broadcast something unintentionally.
Also webcam shutters to make sure your cam isn’t sending video unless you expect it to be.

As someone who’s been doing remote work for the last six years or so, yeah, it’s a mixed bag. Some meetings just don’t work online. But most do.

It’ll be interesting to see what shifts happen from this thing. Like, are all meeting going to be teleconference in the future (please say yes).

Always mute if you aren’t speaking - web or conference call . It’s both polite and saves you from saying something that you don’t want the group to hear.

On WebEx, you can turn off the camera and mute yourself.

I’ve been working with distributed team for many years now. What I’ve learned is that some team work really well in conference calls, others do not. While it can often be traced to one or two people, sometimes it’s a particular pairing that makes it difficult. They are fine on separate teams, but put them on the same team and it’s nearly impossible to have a call.

I already miss my work-provided headset; the volume adjuster also acted as the mute button. The headset I bought to WFH doesn’t have that function.

Yeah, I can mute my headset, but it onl y integrates with webex if used in wired mode, leading to confusion as to whether you are actually muted in wireless mode (webex mute indicator can be off, but you’re still muted).
