I’ve been doing that jump hookup for years, but what is the difference between grounding the dead car on the car rather than using the ground post on the battery? I’ve always heard that it keeps the battery from exploding, but how?

I can feel the disdain in this one.

Doing Drugs or Eating Donuts - sounds like an unreleased Cake album.

You need to ground the good battery to the dead car. It’s an electrical thing that I really don’t understand.

They are surprisingly liberal with the use of the helicopter for search and rescue but I imagine this was not a life or death situation.

That’s backwards, you would be trying to charge the good battery with the bad.

It doesn’t keep the battery form exploding. What it does do is shorten the return path to the good battery, which minimizes voltage drop / increases current flow. Technically it doesn’t really matter, if you go + to + and - to - it will still work, it’s just not optimal. In most cases it won’t make a difference unless maybe the battery you’re starting from is already weak or something, in which case minimizing losses may make the difference between starting and not starting.
Maybe I’ll make a separate post about it with a diagram.

it’s to lessen the possibility of fire in the minuscule chance that the battery is outgassing hydrogen, (which could have been valid 50 years ago, but not really today...)

My son and I pulled a guy out of a tree well on Flower Point in January, so yes checks out.

I think that’s right. The concern is that the battery could be offgassing (hydrogen IIRC), and the spark when completing the circuit could ignite it.
Electrically, it shouldn’t matter, since the body should be grounded on both cars.

It should of course be legal and social acceptable (indeed encouraged) to spray anyone who does this in the face with a fire extinguisher.

If you ground to the dead battery then you are charging the battery...but if you ground to the block close to the starter then you are just starting the car. Both will work but the latter is faster because the circuit is shorter and simpler.
