Wife and I decided to go do our part to stimulate the economy by buying a generator for my bday on Monday. We do a lot of camping and after last year swore that we’d never go without power again, so no this wasn’t a end of world prepper type thing .
I’m curious if any of you have a recommendation on how to make a silencer box in the event that we ever decide to run it throughout the night. Any pro tips are helpful. Thank you and happy end of the world to everyone!

I’ve seen several tutorials on the mater. It seems like an all or nothing affair and the boxes end up being gigantic. If it’ s for home use, go big and don’t forget intake and cooling air. If its for camping, just put it behind something away from campsites if you can.

Kind of what I was thinking as well. Frankly, I don’t think it’s that lou d, but the missus thought it’d be worth inquiring about. We’re only in a pop up anyways, I was more concerned about other campers. Might just make it a point to only run it during the day time and at night time in a pinch.

That’ s the way it should be anyway. 95% of campsites will have generator hours and will get on your case if you violate them. For the same price as building a quiet box you could just buy a backup 12v battery and make a connector that hooks into the 7 pin connector on the popup. We’ve had the battery die on us in the middle of the night in the cold in yellowstone and it killed the heater so I plugged the trailer back into the car and fed power from the car battery for a while to get the heat back up.
My general rule of thumb is to point the exhaust away from as much as possible and as far away as possible and no one complains.

Buy a Honda generator . (only partially sarcastic) I don’t know much about Preda tor and how quiet they are, but I have first hand experience with Honda generators and I haven’t seen another generator that even comes close to how quiet the Honda runs. Yes the Honda’s are very expensive but if quiet is what you’re after they can’t be beat.

Hmm, 65dB. Well my new bike trainer claims to be 64dB and “quiet enough to ride in a library” so obviously you are good as is, unless CycleOps was lying to me (CycleOps was definitely lying to me, though I expected that to be the case so no harm done ).

My dad made one from plans he found online and it ended up being pretty large. I’m not sure how well it worked since that generator went TU and he bought an inverter model that he thinks is quiet enough.

Digging a hole at your campsite to set the generator down in will go a a ways towards quieting things down.

Are you going to run it through the night when camping? What for? (kinda kidding, but that doesn’t sound like camping!)
During/a fter Hurricane Sandy, I augmented my generator with enough battery backup/power so I could turn off my generator around 11 PM and then back on at ~6 AM to limit the noise (and gas usage). Might be a pain to bring a large battery/inverter when camping but you could probably size one big enough for a small fridge if that’s what your aiming for.

Mildly related:
I was gifted an old coleman open frame generator. I also worked at a place that made Golf Cars, which make a similar amount of power from a similar amount of displacement.
Nonconforming golf car muffler, installed to coleman generator:

Two things: Did you know RGT decided to go back to free. The original Lemond trainer is so loud you need to wear hearing protection.

Silencer?
Let that baby purr! I’ve heard Magnaflow makes some sweet cat-less pipes!
