The toilet paper ran out at 6:07. For my part, I was here early to pick up a prepaid order, but it turns out you can’t do that until 8.

Yesterday my local meijer was out of refrigerated raw chicken.
Frozen raw chicken was plentiful and I picked up a few pounds.
Plenty of TP, at least!

Why is this still happening? Shouldn't people have enough by now? Are people taking out loans to buy more?

I was going to say “Walmart closed?” but then saw the rack looks like Neighborhood Market. Those definitely close.

While the CDC stated that masks weren’t 100% effective against the virus, they have yet to explain to people that the ‘mummy wrap’ will not save you either.

Did they at least have eggs? Almost out of liquid eggs and have been dying for real ones.
I’m good on TP since I still have 11 rolls of terrible quality TP that I purchased 18 months ago — glad I kept it but my ass will pay the price!

We ran out of frozen chicken here yesterday, went in today at 6.15am and half the stock was already empty. Uugh.

Which is probably logical at this point, that is most certainly going to negatively impact many more people than the virus itself.

Walmart, Target and a lot of the local/regional supermarkets are closing overnight to restock, for all the good it’s doing.

Totally, and they’re not wrong. This has the potential to define a generation, in terms of its impact worldwide. Maybe not, hopefully not. But every day so far has been more alarming than the one before. Regardless of how many people actually get sick, the economic impact of all the closures will be enormous.

And buying excessive and unwarranted amounts of everything in sight is at least propping up the economy for now.

Of the stores that are going to remain open, basically groceries, pharmacies and Walmart/Target/Costco type “everything stores ,” all of them are reducing hours to allow staff more time to restock and clean, plus setting aside hours for elderly/more susceptible people. Soon we'll see them limiting total number of customers inside at the same time.

Which is reasonable, since so many people are interpreting “social distancing” to mean “all crowd into grocery stores at the same time to buy stuff we don't urgently need a nd stand shoulder to shoulder in line for an hour” .

So they aren’t worried of their arse falling out as much as they are about the arse falling out of the economy. Makes sense. When things go to shit, you need toilet paper.

Agreed... all of our stores have reduced hours, I’ve just never seen a full Walmart Supercenter close before (unlike Target -- ours all close at 10 or 11pm normally ).
That’s the strangest sign of the times. Next it’ll be Waffle House...

Ouch, I just can’t use poor quality paper. It just hurts.
Even in Poland where most use recycled paper, we had to make a special trip to get some Andrex, yes, all my Polish friends found it funny.

I’m guessing it’s like .22 ammo, everyone is so convinced they’ll have to hoard it that they end up buying it all up as it hits the shelf, creating this self-fulfilling prophecy of sorts.

Our local walmart didn’t have TP, most meats, bread, beans, rice, or cereal. Well, there were a few kinds of cereal - mostly weird ones like twinkies cereal.
Cleaners too. My wife resorted to buying some spray bottles and making some bleach-based cleaner and hand sanitiz er for her elderly aunt and uncle who didn’t make it to the store in time to stock up.

Our local grocery switched to an 8:00-20 :00 schedule to allow time for restocking. I haven’t been back since the new schedule to see how stocks are . In other news, I read that Dollar General is reserving the first hour of each day for shopping by seniors only. That’s a good thing.

Washing hands with soap and water is generally more effective than hand sanitizers anyway when it comes to getting pathogens off of hands. It doesn’t even need to be antibacterial soap. Plain soap generally destroys the cell membranes and the running water sloughs everything off of your hands.

We stopped on the way home Monday night to grab a few last minute things since I’m now WFH- UOI, and the local Wally was completely out of gallon jugs of water, including distilled (which I need for my CPAP). I’ve got enough for two weeks, but it would have been nice to pick up a couple more. Didn’t even look for paper products.

We are hoping to keep them as isolated as possible, so hand sanitizer will really only be needed when they have to interact with someone, perhaps at the door.

My theory is that especially more urban people, tend to live hand to mouth, day to day, and when something forces them to look ahead, they don’t know how and they sort of flip out.

I agree.
Country folk are better at both planning ahead and social isolation. In suburbia, we have about 10 people per acre (in my neighborhood it’s probably closer to 15 people per acre)
. In the country, population densities are measure in acres per people.
Growing up, the big grocery store was 45 miles away, so my mom went the grocery store once a month to stock up. We had a lot of canned and frozen goods to sustain us.
When I lived in the country, m y best friend lived three miles away and if I wanted to hang out, I had to hop on a bike and get there myself. The exciting part was trying to ride down dirt and gravel roads on a road bike. I was gravel-biking before gravel bikes were a thing.
So yeah, you’re right. Most suburbanites have trouble dealing with long-term,unforeseen issues.

My wife’s two older sisters are second only to my wife as women that I am close to in life. The eldest sister is very progressive in the not-deeply-thought-out way. She made a claim to me once that because of the density of urban living, urbanites were more likely to be more concerned for each others’ wellfare. Au contraire, mon soir , I said. I said, it’s quite the opposite. In Rural Land, folks depend upon each other. In Urbania, where the lemmings live stacked on top of each other, they mostly have contempt for each other.

You are correct. There have been numerous studies on social interaction and population density. In general, interaction with friends increases with density while interactions with neighbors decreases with density. https://www.researchgate.net/publication/257066946_Does_Urban_Density_Promote_Social_Interaction_Evidence_from_Instrumental_Variable_Estimation
