Two days later, and a visit (phone conversation, actually to be completely clear, they cancelled my office visit for what should be obvious reasons, but did a tele-medicine interview) to the Dr. (which was already scheduled for a routine checkup and blood-pressure med refill) I have given the go-ahead to treat t his as diverticulitis. Large doses of antibiotics incoming, and plenty of rest and fluids, and no red meat, limited dairy, onions, garlic, or spicy food for a week. :P If it gets rid of the pain, and keeps me from having peritonitis I guess I'll survive.

Well, at least you know, and you can do something about it. Best wishes.

I can see limiting corn, high fiber foods but “ dairy, onions, garlic, or spicy food ” affects diverticulitis?

Sorry to hear you are still suffering. Regretted cracking jokes when you were still up and posting in the middle of the night. Everything is serious lately.

Meh, shit happens. And of course it happens during one of our busiest times of year... Stress may be a contributing factor.

huh.
I’m not sure how those foods have any effect but then I’m not the one who does the diverticulitis treatment.
I’m the one who tells the ER: there’s nothing going on, it’s diverticulitis, or it’s a diverticular abscess. Peritonitis doesn’t usually occur till later. Rarely, I tell the ER “this looks like cancer, not diverticulitis”.

I figured as much on the last count. I thought about you last night when I was enduring some discomfort that was probably helped along by stress.

Apparently it’s mostly a comfort/inflammation thing re: spice, and onion, with some saying garlic is not a problem at all... conflicting medicine, as usual. On the diary front, the idea is if you are at all prone to lactose intolerance, the infection and antibiotic meds will make it worse, and no one wants extra gas and intestinal distress on top of diverticulitis. Oddly my GP says, eat some yogurt, but don’t drink milk... whatever.
At least I have an excuse to pig out wicked on fish, shrimp and scallops, as seafood is universally agreed to be a good choice if you aren’t allergic, and I’m not ;) No chowders or bisques, but I can live with that.

Did they say anything about seeds and nuts? That’s the only thing my grandmother complained about when she was diagnosed with it. Listen to what they say. She didn’t and ended up with a colostomy. :/

Modern research seems to indicate that seeds and nuts are not as bad as previously thought, but reducing intake of pokey spices like anise seed is probably not a bad idea...

Hey! Welcome to the club!
Interesting that they told you to avoid high-fiber foods. I was told to keep up on my fiber intake and stop eating seeds and nuts.
I haven’t had a repeat since the original diagnosis in 2005, thank goodness...and I do keep up on the fiber. I haven’t stopped eating seeds and nuts though.

That’s good news! Now I’m wondering what grandma ate to aggravate her condition.

so, low fiber foods UNTIL the pain goes away, then keep the fiber intake up. Recent research seems to indicate seeds and nuts aren’t as big a problem as they once thought. This is my first attack, I would dearly love it to be my last for a long time. This is very unpleasant .

Now that you say it, that makes more sense.
I had a problem...going...when I wasn’t on what my body considered home turf. That could be either work or my apartment. So when I went away to my mom’s house, then to my gf’s house on a 5 day trip during the Thanksgiving holiday...well...I got a bit backed up. That’s when the infection finally took hold for me.
I went to work on Monday in pain, then finally at 2AM that night I decided I better take myself to the emergency room. I ended up being admitted to the hospital for two days and getting a crazy dose of some antibiotic that began with a Z. I was released Thursday afternoon, but still had a fever the following morning and decided to call it a weekend.
