Kinja'd!!!

Anybody working today? It being Monday and all? My wife works for UT-Austin, and the university decided to let supervisors decide who is essential and who is not, and Mrs. Ttyymmnn was deemed essential and had to go to work. There are two other office employees who were also deemed essential, but there’s really only reason for one of them to be there, so they are going to meet and figure out a rotation. Our family is still scheduled to volunteer at the Central Texas Food Bank today and Wednesday. People still gotta eat.

Still looking like six days a week. I got a promotion yesterday , but I’ve yet to find out the gnitty-gritty details as far as exactly what my new job will entail.

Good on you for volunteering. I can only imagine how in need of help t he food banks must be right now

Working from home, business as usual for us...but the kids are out for the equivalent of a 1/3 summer vacation right now. The hardest part being that we can’t (responsibly) do so many of the activities they enjoy — playgrounds, science centers, etc — so we just dropped a bunch of money at Hobby Lobby on crafts and projects to keep them busy.

Mrs. Ash78 is already a competent “ part-time homeschooler” so it’s just an issue of sanity right now. I was out at Home Depot at 6:30 this morning buying a bunch of paint (no traffic!) , the contractors are coming to do the house...it’s eerily normal all things considered. As long as people maintain sanitary conditions and stay out of large groups, life can still be semi-normal.

One interesting thing I read about this is that we want to react psychologically like it was 9/11 or the 2008 crash, but we’re not really allowed to be in groups, so it’s extra hard on everyone. I went to a funeral yesterday...wouldn’t have missed it for the world. 200+ people, most of them over 70. Bold. But zero handshakes or hugs. That’s hard.

My middle schoolers are perfectly content to sit and watch YouTube or play video games all day long. And they can still communicate with their friends over Discord or whatever. It’s harder for my high schooler, who is quickly getting bored. I think we’ll have to play some trumpet duets together, or work on cleaning out his closet. Weather is rainy all week, so probably can’t go to the park or bike riding.

Good on you for still volunteering at a food bank during all of this!

I’m WFH for at least the next 2 weeks. I’m in IT though so I can easily do it remotely anyway.

I’m a little skeezy about going out, but that’s only because of the aura of fear that is permeating everything these days. I’m sure it will be fine. We’ll have gloves, and probably masks, and we’ll likely be preparing boxes of food for shut-ins. That’s a good thing.

There is literally nothing my wife has to be at work for, she can do every aspect  of her job from home. They just want to keep the doors open for some reason.

I’m here at work. Small business, limited outside “big group” exposure though we do have a lot of traveling taking place, and we have some deadlines to meet for which I have to draw things: if I’m not here to front-load the whole process with drawings and lists of parts, it doesn’t happen. I could conceivably try to borrow a machine at the house to try to draft and use inventory software using remote desktop, but to put it plainly, that sounds about as fun as stapling my eyelids.

There are a few unlucky folks at our place in a similar position to your wife - Law Enforcement and Facilities has to stay there with a skeleton crew to keep the facility operating and secure.

The rest of us are out though - we’re officially allowed back in the building today to grab anything we may need. I’ll be heading in shortly to do just that.

Whole families here go out together riding bikes etc. when the sun is out. It’s raining off and on but there are a lot of people on the bike paths when I have taken Sylvie for a walk.
