!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
We told that data caps and bandwidth throttling are necessary to keep the bits flowing. But despite an enormous surge of activity due to everyone being stuck in their houses and ISP’s turning off those “protections”, somehow you’re still able to see this post. Interesting, right?
The student loan interest is also an infuriating example, as someone who went to school during the Bush Jr. era and paid 8% ! I was constantly ranting about the absurdity. It’s true, ask my wife.
Anyway, keep your bullshit filters tuned up as things start to go back to normal and never forget that things are the way they are because someone chose to make it that way.

My internet is always slow.
I finished my undergrad in 2009, and will be finishing my masters in the fall. Maybe I should stop going back to school, it seems to trigger a global economic crisis.

My brother was class of ‘09 and yeah he had good times, especially as he had focused on real estate development in college . He spent some time in an unpaid internship with a company that was mainly just trying to make insulting low-ball offers on properties for sale (which didn’t work), before giving up and getting a customer service call-center job. He’s worked his way up to a good marketing position now though.

Yes, I've noticed that the Internet, electricity, sewer, and water service all seem to be running normally. Along with cell phones, garbage pickup, and the mail. Hasn't stopped people from hoarding bottled water, and a friend of mine recently noted his local grocery store was totally out of laxatives, not sure what the need would be there.

1) Internet data caps are stupid
2) Things manageable in an emergency are not necessarily manageable outside of that emergency. I’m not going to be dropping bombs on Germany today to stop the spread of fascism , even though that worked in the 1940s.

Yeeeeeeaaaaaahhhhh, I remember being an intern at an automotive supplier. My advisor found out I had looked for a new position without going through him (he was doing nothing) so he told my current employer who made me sign something to say I was not going to find another internship. I was then fired a month later as they closed down the plant. I also found out my advisor told that other company I didn’t follow the rules so I got blacklisted form their internship program. I almost dropped out of college due to being unable to pay for it since I lacked a job/internship. GOOD TIMES!
Th e kick to the groin of all that was the other company? The interns hip they had? It was in Germany. Wi th Porsche. In their “Paint and special coatings department”. A.k.a. the dream job I still chase to this day.....

I was also class of ‘09 and had a pretty rough time. Job fairs with no actual openings and low-ball offers, including the one I accepted. Thankfully, it was at a start-up where I was able to re-negotiate a couple years later when we were acquired.

If we make it through this and end up with mandatory paid sick leave at a bare minimum, I’ll be happy. Universal healthcare is too much to ask, I’m sure.

C onservative capitalists pre-coronavirus: I got mine, FU.
During coronavirus: The government should take care of it’s citizens, provide for their health and well being and make sure no predatory companies can take advantage of them in a grave situation.
After corona-virus: I still got mine, FU.

Zero chance.
Something I’ve thought about - seeing how the virus has roiled locations with universal care, what could it do in the land of the free where millions realistically lack care and will often forego it simply due to the price? Seems to me it’d be even worse here.

The mantra of both a generation and a movement: I got mine, you can go to hell.
Sadly, the establishment corporate types on the supposed left aren’t really any different, standing in the way of any ideal of universal systems and reform.

We had about 2 days of mild panic, but today seems more mild. Our house painter is here working normally. I already work from home, which is an easy transition. Stores still have people in them, albeit with employees wearing gloves (because a virus on gloves is ok, while a virus on skin is bad!).
The biggest disruption for most people in my area is the school shutdown. 3 weeks minimum.
Wait, maybe this whole thing is a conspiracy by the teachers’ union....they’re the most powerful union in AL. It makes sense if they can’t get a longer summer, just get paid for some extra spring break. Nailed it!

T ens of millions of people in the US (if not more) are going to die in the coming months if the US doesn’t shut down all non-essential services and quarantine every city.

That could be alarmist, but it still won’t be pretty.
And Canada, BC lower mainland especially , is likely up next. It’ll be interesting to see how that system handles it, but I suspect fewer will worry about being driven to ruin.

And for those who lack care, would they even be shown in the statistics because they aren’t going for care? I could see the #’s looking better than reality due to people just not going.

It’s a bit depressing watching this primary go straight back to corporate democrats. At this point Bernie is a long, long shot and my only hope is that Biden picks someone progressive as VP and (this is cold) kicks the bucket after (hopefully) winning the election.

This is something I’ve been wondering lately: Should I refinance my garbage student loans? The rates definitely look good right now, and if I’m going to be paying on them until I die anyway, I might as well pay...less? Ish? Whatever.
Life is pointless, bring on the death.

Data throttling and bandwidth issues seems dumb. People are constantly using bandwidth whether or not they are teleworking.
Like 90%+ of people don’t have a web browser open all the time or aren’t saving to a company server.
The shit posting will continue!

That probably depends on how much you owe and the difference between the before/after rates. Maybe there’s an online calculator for that.
I think we refinanced once, which saved us only 0.25% on the rate, but also consolidated about 7 loans into one which was nice.

Student loans really piss me off. I’m stuck with high interest rates just like you. If I could refinance them at a low interest rate , I might have a prayer of paying them off before I die (I’m paying for six degrees - 3 for me, 3 for my wife). For now, I’ll focus on getting my kids through college without debt.

It irks and amuses me how the generation who was actually about being progressive, who wanted positive change, who at least for a time valiantly fought “the man” is now “the man” and is behind so much of the shit that ails us.
Your hopes are indeed cold, but not objectionable. Something needs to change, and soon.

Very good point. If you’re not in the system, you likely won’t be counted with any specific description . Just another anonymous statistic. And leave it to the powers that be to use such stats to pad the numbers.

It’s really not that alarmist . America isn’t taking this seriously. The medical system there is about to collapse under the weight of the pandemic.

Some of the predictions I have read call for literal millions of deaths in the US . Not going to happen.
I’ll wager your prediction is also alarmist. But if you can back up that tens of millions claim, I will like to see it. Otherwise, your username checks out.
Really, as Canada seems to mimic the US in all the worst ways (growing mindless conservatism, dying middle class, etc) , it’ll be interesting to see if anything different is done north of 49, seeing that the response there so far is almost a carbon copy of the US.

Canada has declared a state of emergency and closed the borders. Ontario has also required all restaurants, bars, and entertainment venues to close. The only exceptions are for take out food orders. I expect that all businesses will be forced to close soon.
Also, my numbers were simply based on the current fatality rate if 80% of the US population becomes infected.

The borders aren’t “closed”. I could drive across right now if I wanted. With NEXUS I’d barely receive a glance. Nothing you mention is different than what is happening in much of the US.
No reputable source is running with numbers similar to yours. But maybe you know something they don’t. You should tell them to beware.
