Today is my dad’s 80th birthday. He’s in Virginia, we’re in Texas. So, since we’re all hanging out at home these days, I thought I’d throw together a little quartet arrangement of Happy Birthday for me and my boys to perform for him . This is actually a recording of a rehearsal, and I arranged for a live performance on a FaceTime that included my brother (Oppo’s own RustyVandura) and his family in CA and my niece in UT. Technology sucks sometimes, but it was nice being able to see and talk to everybody on this big day.

Happy Birthday, Poppy!

Next time he turns 80. It was priceless though.

That is cool. The family that plays together stays together! Best to you (and Poppy)!

That is the coolest thing ever.

My dad turned 84, and his birthday request was that we not sing to him.

Thanks. I was trying to think of something we could do that was special. On Friday, one of the band director’s at my boys’ middle school had a birthday, and the final period students (what few were left after parents took most of the kids home) played HB for him. I guess that gave me the idea. I was originally going to FaceTime just with him, but then I had the idea of  including the rest of the family. It was really nice. FaceTime chats can be awkward, but it was nice seeing everybody.

Right now my fondest wish is for my daughter to play a flute duet with me, which she steadfastly will not do. But someday, I would love to recreate this.

Keep after it. Try Christmas tunes in December.

Christmas tunes are the things we have most practiced.

She started in fourth grade with her school contracting the Music Learning Band company. I had issues with the way they teach music. Now, in eighth grade, her school is running a program out of the nearby catholic high school. But I’m not sure they’re doing it right either. Half way through the year, my kid said they didn’t even play entire scales yet. She is so bored.

I saw the high school Christmas band concert and was thoroughly underwhelmed. Still, the director is a young guy who started this program almost entirely from scratch a scant few years ago. He now  has a couple of different concert bands and a jazz band. So I’m trying to cut him some slack.

I used to teach one lesson a week at an exclusive Episcopal high school. They put together a band program, but the instrumentation was really weird because they had so few kids. I went to one concert, and it was interesting. I’m sure it’s difficult without a standard group. Does your daughter take private lessons? A lesson teacher might get her a bit more motivated and give her more stuff to play. My son who plays bass clarinet is getting a little tired of always playing oom-pah on everything, and he really looks forward to lessons and solo/ensemble contests for something more interesting to play. Are there one or two other kids in the band she can get together with and play duets or trios?

This is great! So nice. We got our last high school jazz concert in last Thursday and the attendance was down but the kids did a great job. My daughter is playing the violin in her band (vanguard ) and transposing the sax music since there really isn’t music written for violin. She is really good and it’s so fun to watch.

I’ve got a huge collection of quartets etc, and I printed out two of them today to rewrite for our little ensemble. Maybe I’ll post one after we rehearse it a bit.

Her band is really limited in size, and no one is at the level where playing is really rewarding yet. It could be if they pursued it, it my daughter likely won’t be one of that set. I think this is going to be it for her. The high school she is going to has no band program, and she’s not interested enough for lessons or extracurricular groups. I’ll just have to be glad that she got the exposure to making music that she did, and hope that someday she dusts off that flute for her own fun.

On that note, did you see this Ted Ed video? It’s cool and reminds us that learning an instrument is valuable even if you never continue it after school.

We have the clarinet, violin and string bass. I don’t play an instrument but could strum cords on a guitar or three cords on an accordion .

Y’all could even play from a church hymnal.

The band director played it at the orientation meeting for the parents. I think it’s pretty effective.
