Apologies for the low quality (I’m thinking it’s time to upgrade my dashcam to something that works better at night) but I wanted to share this wonderful car I encountered last weekend:
Those lights on the inside by the license plate were white, and on constantly.
And as a bonus, they weren’t just white taillights, they were also white brake lights, getting brighter when the car braked:
I would hope driving along with what’s essentially a pair of headlights sticking out of your trunk would get you pulled over right away, but this guy didn’t seem too bothered.
I can’t quite place the tail light pattern to figure out if those are reverse lights that shouldn’t be on, or if they are brake/taillights that have the wrong color lenses/bulbs.

That's a second generation Lexus GS. Those are typically running lights with a white bulb behind a red lens. Somehow almost all of them have faded and lost their red color so now theres white lights on the back

Early 2nd gen GS' taillights fade to white all the time.

Hmm, that’s pretty bad. These were definitely pure white, but does certainly explain what I was seeing.

Anyone using their brakes that much on the highway needs a bus pass.

They’re inexpensive to replace, or you could do vinyl. I do think drivers SHOULD do something about it...

Yeah, these definitely should not have passed inspection. I’d think you could probably just find some red bulbs.

Ha! Ive learned that brake lights on the freeway means 1) I dont know how to pass,or choose my lane in a timely manner so will go behind and brake to move right, or 2) Im looking at the phone (usually nissan drivers)

Yep. One of the reasons I went with the facelift.

It only affects the 98-00 cars. The 01-04 facelift fixed them and a couple other issues (but not all of them!)

I honestly forgot that these got a facelift.

It was minor. The biggest change was the V8 option changing from the 1UZ to the 3UZ. The taillights were changed, the wheels on the 300 were changed to the 6-spoke ones, and there was an issue with the brake booster that got fixed.

I don’t actually remember what state this was, but it would have been either Massachusetts or New Hampshire, both of which do actually inspect cars.

TBH I wish we would inspect cars here. The amount of complete death traps on the road here that wouldn’t even pass the most basic safety inspection is staggering. With our economics and politics I don’t see it happening any time soon. Interestingly Albuquerque requires emissions testing every 2 years for vehicles registered in the county or commuting in daily but still no safety inspection.
