How...ok I don’t really s im race, so this is a dumb question...how do you run out of virtual fuel?
What happened to Herta/why would you need to pit?
Are there other mechanical things that can break like in real racing? Like is there a setting where a random driver’s engine can just blow?

As far as fuel goes, I think with these sims you can even change your fuel mixture as part of your strategy, e.g. cruise for first stint on lean fuel, one-stop, and then spend more of your time on rich fuel to go quicker in the latter part of the race. So, there is a virtual fuel of sorts, and it can be impacted by things like lift-and-coast, just like in F1.
I missed why Herta went to the pits but only times I’ve seen people go to the pits is for on-track damage, like for a new front wing.
Not sure about the parts/engine failures but hopefully someone else can fill us in on that.

(Butchered filthy casual explanation)
1. Racing sim games usually have variables
set before the race: how fast the tyres degrade, fuel consumption, damage level and even slipstream efficacy. So let’s say everyone on the grid has, say, 100 units of
fuel. Depending on how many laps they run, the game can be set so that
x
unit
of fuel burns every
y
minutes
, or there’s a percent of tyre life lost per lap before needing to pit.
2. Didn’t catch that bit, unfortunately. Generally, for full-distance races (where they race exactly as long as real life), pitting works as usual. In shorter races, you pit either because it’s mandatory (if rules stipulate all dry compounds must be used) or because of strategy or because the car’s broken.
3. Damage can set to either nil or cosmetic (you see the part fall off but the car runs fine) or realistic (lose a rear wing and you lose rearward downforce). I’ve yet to see an actual engine go up in smoke anywhere in the games I’ve watched, but most games do simulate engine, aero, bodywork, chassis, suspension, and gearbox damage depending on the level of contact.

Appreciate it! I don’t know if they even mentioned Herta at the end. Leaderboard showed him in pits and dropping back to 16th but the finish showed him P10, so I got a little lost.
