So it’s Sunday, and church is canceled. This week, as COVID Contagion Chaos has unfolded, I have looked to Oppo for strength and support and I feel like part of a community of souls who are excellent . As I’ve spoken with colleagues and family, I am frequently referring to my correspondent in Indiana or SoCal or England or Australia or Japan or Mexico.. . People from all over the planet checking in and supporting each other. That’s priceless in internet dollars. Somewhere, Molly is smiling.

Yeah, we’ll get through this. Our schools are now closed for the next three weeks. This week we’re just plain closed. Next week is spring break. The week after we’ll be doing e-learning. Hopefully by then the world will be in a place where we can get back to it.

I’ve got my five days planned, I couldn’t sleep last night as ideas started coming to me . Days 1-3 will be tool ID/use videos. One on hammers, another on wrenches, and another on pliers. Day 4, draw a floor plan of your bedroom. Day 5, how to change a tire.

I’ve got other ideas if we end up having to do more, but hopefully they won’t be necessary.

Kinja'd!!!

I will have to include Hammer the cat in that first video somehow.

All of my music teaching friends have been wracking their brains about e-teaching ensemble pieces . I can’t even imagine what a challenge this is for you!! (But also...your lessons are ones I’d probably need to watch.)

We finished any and all shopping yesterday, and even ordered pizza for pi day.

I’ll be working from home the next few weeks, kids will be limited to here and my in laws, but my wife will continue to work. As a doctor, it’s not optional for her, but we expect her business to slow down as people cancel appointments.

I do know someone who’s reporting symptoms (who I saw EXACTLY 14 days before he go sick), so I’m concerned about him. He’s otherwise healthy but his wife has underlying health issues. Hoping she doesn’t catch it.

Take care of yourself!

We do a good job of supporting each other and that’s rare these days. I see more fear mongering and conspiracy theory’s than sane thoughts on the news these days.

Ask Nibby what videos to have music students watch.

I share your hope that in three weeks we can begin a return to normalcy, but I have a feeling that at best, we will only be at the end of the beginning.

I’m planning on sharing here with the community what I come up with. Currently, I am working on getting a list of all the cell phone numbers my students have. My cell phone number is out there and several of my students text me regularly with questions. It’s an excellent way to support them with minimal effort and way more efficient than just hanging around after school.

Jalapeños on a pizza? That’s so wrong. But so right. We eat lots of jalapeños around here, and I am planting some for our use this year. I’ll be reporting on that...

Maybe bake some oatmeal chippers this week, or ask my daughter to bake them for me... I’ll be in touch.

With the  state of our percussion equipment they’d be better off watching shop-teacher’s videos too.

The latter is astounding to me. Our country is deranged. But not I and not for a few others who have poor judgment and too much free time and they lurk on Oppo.

There will be many who will carry on life as normal and at worst, be sick in bed a day or three. Hopefully these will realize how fortunate they are and not turn around and report that this all was a bunch of hype.

I'm not teaching my normal curriculum, as that would be entirely impossible. My advice to them is to think of something related, but different, that can be done individually.

Would your district spring for birdhouse kits from Home Depot that the kids can pick up when they get their lunches?

It’s giardiniera actually, along with sausage, pepperoni and extra sauce from Giordanos. Delicious but the giardi niera is pretty spicy.

That’s my go to combination on any pizza if I'm not sharing.

No, but if they'll let me back in the building, I have plenty wood to produce some sort of kit.

My wife's school is out for 4 weeks starting Monday.  Google docs is now a permanent part of her life. Surprised how many other teachers are computer illiterate.  The group chat on why someone couldn't find the shared drive at home was hilarious .

I could do private lessons over FaceTime or something, but some of my students don’t even own a computer. I’ve got a two-week lesson plan for them to practice, assuming our spring break is extended, which I think it almost certainly will be. This situation has also put the entire state contest in jeopardy. That’s a lot of hard work and extra rehearsals down the tubes.

I’m not watching the news or even reading much on my computer. I get news alerts when something important happens, and until I hear from them, I’m going to remain in blissful ignorance. We are scheduled to volunteer at the local food bank two days next week. I think we’ll go, unless they tell us to stay away. Lots of people are relying on the food right now.

Mr Vandura’s Video Series Syllabus

DAY I: Variegation of the BFH

DAY II: “ Wrench every day” - 8 hours of Tavarish condensed into 20 questions

DAY III: Plyer with a grip of... (not safe for student consumption  Oppo joke is “ Plyer with a grip of Vodka”

All of the percussion competitions got canned. Thankfully I wasn’t bringing a group this year but some folks are struggling to get refunds for their trip to nationals.

They at least extended the age out requirement for next year to allow another year for  kids who didn’t get to compete this season.
