The toilet paper hoarding is absolute insanity, along with the buying up of all of the perishable foods and chicken noodle soup. Meanwhile I bought two packs of beer, a rack of ribs, a pack of goetta, a box of Cliff bars, and a box of Kleenex. People are very stupid

I grabbed the last rack of baby back ribs in the butcher case. People are planning the end of world, and I’m planning my dry rub.
One of the stock guys (I know everyone there after 20 years) told me he doesn’t understand why people are buying up TP before food since if you don’t eat, nothing will come out of your ass to wipe. I told him his understanding of basic human physiology puts him in the 95th percentile. At least.

I went to HEB the morning pick up some meds (I have an ear/sinus infection) and wandered around a bit. Store was quiet, not too crowded. Cleaning products and laundry and dish detergent sold out. Eggs, small amount remaining. Frozen veggies and potatoes (french fries etc) cleaned out. They had some diapers, but baby wipes were gone. Chips were decimated, but they were restocking. Cooking oil took a major hit, sugar and flour sold out. Canned soup, veggies, and fruits gone. Pasta and spaghetti sauce gone, bread thin but they were restocking tortillas. Meat supplies were holding up, but chicken was thin. Probably mostly more expensive beef like steaks. Fresh fruits and veggies holding up, but thinning. But, as you noticed, alcohol was very well stocked.
HEB announced reduced hours for their stores effective immediately. Stores will be open from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm only, to give the staff time to restock.

My wife went to our local Albertsons yesterday to get some basic stuff to get us through next week (bread, milk, eggs, etc.) and found that while it was busy it wasn’t crazy. Some things were running low but it wasn't like that picture. Corned beef and Guinness were abundant so she got some of both. The thing that she was really mad about was that nothing was on sale. Everything in the store was full price.

People snapped up all the ground beef in my area in addition to the toilet paper. I have never wanted to be an asshole more in my life so I could walk up and ask them why they did that. Just go up and be like “ What is your plan here? Y ou’re really going to do nothing but shit and eat plain burgers for two weeks if you get told to isolate?”

The best part was, that at this Kroger at least, the canned foods (minus the chicken noodle) were all still fully stocked. People are going daffy, and yet they believe that shitting is going to be their biggest issue.

I guess I can’t blame the store for locking in profits in the face of uncertainty. At least they didn’t hike prices. My Albertsons had all its normal sales. And it was full but not panicked. People weren’t practicing social distancing in line because there was no room. I was telling my wife it’s up to the store to mark lines and intervals for people to follow. You can’t expect everyone to figure it out on the fly.

I discovered today there’s now a Dollar General, a visual blight on one of my favorite small towns in Indiana.
But it turned out they had fresh bananas and lots of bread and other items I probably can’t find close to home so now my road trip ends with a Jeep loaded with groceries including some ice cream in a can cooler I hope survives the next couple of hours.

It’s interesting to read us all compare our store stock patterns and see what’s different.
Oh, and my daughter got tortillas. In truth, I dropped her off, and she did it all while I got my hair cut.
One of the painters at work told me the nearest HEB, near Waco I think, is where he gets his premade margarita by the case for cheap. If a Mexican stocks up in that, I take it as a valuable tip. You should too.
Rest up and get well.

I went to the grocery store yesterday to stock up on a few items. One particular shelf was alarmingly empty, but I went to another store and got lucky:
Kraut emergency temporarily over. I was able to get the plain organic variety but have a rain check for the other flavors. And I got some biscuits. This could have been a very tough weekend, but perseverance paid off...

Thanks. Looks like we’ll have plenty of time for that. Right now, we’re waiting to see if Mrs. Ttyymmnn has to go in on Monday. UT-Austin closed suddenly on Friday when UT’s president announced that his wife has the covid. Now he’s getting tested. I’m hoping they go with essential staff only next week, and she is not essential.

I have to say, in my section of PA at least people are being slightly logical with what they’re hoarding. Beans, pasta, non-perishable meals, chicken and beef. All the soups and rice are gone equally, too. Frozen stuff was mainly untouched.

Part German, so it’s in the blood. One of my earliest memories, at three years old, is having kraut dogs with dad when mom was in the hospital. Kraut and mustard - that’s all I need.
I also have a thing for kimchi. Mom used to make it from scratch, although dad made her get a separate small refrigerator to keep it in so it wouldn’t stink up the main fridge. What can I say - I like cabbage. Much better for you that lettuce and much more versatile.

I think their liquor and wine were reasonable. Not trader Joe’s cheap on wine, but decent. I think a lot of liquor stores shut down when they opened up in the Dallas area.
It’s kinda weird jogging my memory and then realizing you can’t buy liquor at a grocery store, etc. in Texas . It was equally weird when I first moved up here and saw that you could buy liquor at most any store.

I’ve wanted to try this brand but it usually sells for about $2.50/jar. I couldn’t justify the cost on my budget, usually sticking to store brands or canned and just refilling a large jar I keep in the fridge . But this week this stuff is on sale for $1/jar and so I jumped on it. That price probably explains why the shelf was empty, although I question why so many people were buying large quantities of kraut (besides myself): is it panic buying or the price? I wouldn’t think that it would be a very popular product. I’m not a good judge of what's normal when it comes to food, and was probably one of the few people that liked to buy cans of sauerkraut juice to drink...

Kraut juice drinker, here, too. I love all manner of fermented cabbage. Kraut, kimchi, can’t get enough of either. Just thinking about it makes me want to go to a buffet place and eat like 14 plates full. But they’re sketchy enough under the best of circumstances, and now is not the time.
But I may have to brave the grocery store this afternoon.
