This gun belonged to my step grandfather, Saul, who I only met once. His grandson has it now (same cousin with the .454 Casull...). Apart from the craftsmanship, I love the darkened grip from the oil and perspiration in Saul’s hand. Saul had bird dogs and did a lot of duck hunting. This must have been one of Saul’s most prized possessions. My cousin says he has no intention of ever firing it again, and of handing it down to his son. (Note the epic gun room that’s hinted at in these pics.)

My cousin has a vast property in New Kent County, Virginia with an extraordinary home that he built himself. This rifle, in .45 caliber, is a muzzle loader that he had custom made. When he picked it up from the gunsmith who made it for him, he took it straight home and loaded the first bullet into it and promptly killed a buck with it. He’d owned the gun for less than thirty minutes.

Who will help me eat it?

“I will, Cousin!”

Since it has a pistol grip between the trigger and the stock, it is considered an assault shotgun.

Nice double barrel.

My favorite shotgun t o shoot was a double barrel 12- ga just like that. I only got to shoot it one day, but it was a glorious day.

It’s his call to make. I’d probably not shoot it either.

Yeah, it’s a beautiful piece. And I love the patina about it.

Eh i get that but i kind a feel the same about cars as guns. They are mechanical things that should be used

That is a beautiful shotgun - I love the engraving on old shotguns. There are few that are more beautiful than an old double barrel!

Thanks for sharing this and the story behind it - I have a couple hand me down guns from my grandfather so I get the feelings about not even firing a gun again.

It’s tricky with firearms especially, as they age the metal gets more brittle with use and new rounds are much more powerful than they used to be so at a point that risk/reward proposition swings in the other direction towards not firing a gun.

The two most prized guns in my collection came from my grandfather Papa ( Jim) - he taught me most of what I know about guns, how to train a dog, how to trout fish and a good deal of other things . The first is a 20 ga Remington 1100 made in the late 70's with beautiful engraving on the receiver that he gave me when I turned 16 and I used to go hunting with this gun regularly but now it only goes out for rounds of trap. The story behind it is that it has never missed a squirrel in its life. This was told to me when I got the gun, and I’ve carried on that legacy. It has made me be very careful about the shots taken with it and truly appreciate the gun.

The second is a single shot .410 that was given to my grandfather by his grandfather. I got this after he passed about 10 years ago. It’s not worth much at all, but it is to me.
