For comparison, what I was using -
Icon is apparently known for making very narrow helmets, and oh boy was this the case here. It fit great... But putting it on and off was a monumental task. And it’s big. Reeeeal big. My XL shares the same exterior bucket size as the 2- and 3XL versions. Heavy too, at least for a sporty bucket. It caught wind like crazy and made my neck sore. Oh, and it was tricky to make glasses work, even after cutting out some foam.
Enter Scorpion’s flag(ish) s hip carbon lid.
Significantly lighter, and a bit smaller in exterior dimensions. Riding on the scooter I was very surprised to find that my top speed increased after changing out helmets! No more soreness either. If unsprung mass is king, and rotating mass is emperor... I guess on-head mass would be God..?
Still has a drop down sun visor like the icon, although now I’ve got pinlock compatible shields for anti-fogging. Glasses fit completely normal with the new lid too. Oh and the air bladder system to tighten the pads around your face? Genius.
Only real complaint is the noise level, but now that it’s not such a squeeze to put on, I can probably wear my earbuds.
Unfortunately the color choices were black, and black with ugly g rey p instriping. I ordered some reflective stuff to apply for better visibility.
So yes, I’m now riding around in a carbon fiber sports bucket on my flaming Stella Scooter. Or if the mood strikes, grabbing the Icon for a Satanic Iron Man cosplay. Oddly enough it’s middle-aged women who seem yo be taking the most pictures at stop lights.
I took a Monster 1200 out for a test ride today. Update: still in love.
I half-seriously asked about getting to ride a V2. The salesman (sales kid?) said sure, come back when it’s dry and a bit warmer. Looking forward to that...
Still need to hop on a Ninja 400. I’m hoping it can win my heart, as it’s undoubtedly the smartest choice of the Italian, German, and Austrian bikes I’ve been looking at...

Not terribly long ago, something like that would have been enormously expensive. Looks pretty cool, and will also look good in the sun.
That reminds me, if I get back on two wheels again, a new helmet will be a priority. My current/last one is a HJC something or other, which fits adequately but not perfectly, I had to modify some padding. I suspect the ones that fit me best will be the most expensive.
I have a biker friend I talked to recently about my guilty pleasure of Busas - his response was “don’t”, but I think like with Gixxers, the rider base spoiled it for him. He was more receptive to something like a Hypermotard, but he’s a big Suzuki DRZ devotee. That’s what he recommended most, I fear them due to prior bad experience with carbs.

Where were you test riding these things? Do you have a Ducati dealer again?

Makes you wonder what tech will make it’s way down into our fingers in a few years.
I know the MIPS rotational system is big in the MTB world. Seems to be catching on for motorcycle helmets too, albeit slowly. I would have gone with a lid that had that safety tech , but the ones I tried fit me terribly.
That's what I'm slowly starting to realize is dangerous about bikes. They're relatively small, so.... You can always add another to the stable

Yes! Lynnwood Motoplex is now a dealer for Ducati. I’m not sure if it’s to the same degree as the old Ducati spot in Redmond, but they seemed to have a large inventory.
Between Ducati, BMW, KTM, Yamaha, Kawasaki, and Indian, they've literally got every bike I've strongly considered. They even have some used Africa twins out front, as if I needed more temptation to visit.

Awesome! Well I'm currently in death valley eating lunch, my Africa twin brought me here. The thing is pretty great. Not as fun as the monster on road, but kills on dirt and just chews up the miles.

My carbon fiber Joe Rocket helmet is just abut 10 years old now, probably about time to hang it up. It never seemed much lighter but it is pretty. Those vents on the top of yours look huge, will be nice in the summer.

My last helmet was the Scorpion EXO-R2000. For the price it was/is a hard helmet to beat. The weight was reasonably light, no pressure points, finish was excellent, quieter than my current Shoei X14, the fabric fells softer to the skin than my Shoei, and came with a clear and dark shield! I wouldn’t have a problem going back to their products for the price. The only issue I had with mine is the cheek air bladders sprung a leak a few times. The helmet felt too big when they were deflated (I love a tight helmet).

If I do end up with a motorcycle , my cheap HJC helmet is probably going to be replaced fairly quickly, since I got it for autocross knowing that weight and aerodynamics didn’t matter at all with how I was going to use it . . . but they would if I rode regularly.
Both of yours look the part, for sure.

Seems like scorpion has nailed the high-end feature-set at a mid-range price point. Here's hoping my air bladders stay in good shape for awhile!

I think eventually there has to be a point of diminishing returns in such tech, but there are more advancements to come, no doubt. I haven’t tried on a (motorcycle) helmet in years, but I recall the cool ones could be a grand back in the day, and definitely weren’t carbon fiber.
Y ou can fit several bikes in the space of one car, and even sneak them into your living quarters. Hoarders love bikes.

I’ve been wondering if I should replace my cycling and skiing helmets to get something with MIPS support. Seems to be strongly recommended in both cases, and my helmets are 6 and 7 years old respectively , so it might be time.

I just picked up one of the same ones but in solid white. Seems to be the best option going for the price point.

Ooof. This was less than half that thankfully. The only $1k+ ones I saw were race-replica helmets for the bigger names in racing, and... A couple CF Arai helmets I think?

Probably time. That's my game plan for getting back into MTB and snowboarding

Yeah Arai have always been top of the line, I believe it . I remember back in the day there was an Airoh racing type replica I thought was cool, but pricey. However, for head protection, one shouldn’t be a cheapskate.

On the car side, one of the best purchases I ever made was a lighter carbon fiber helmet. I have neck problems on a good day, and having less mass wobbling around up there helps a ton!

Yeah, it's night and day. This is a lesson I'll remember if I ever do any driving that requires a helmet purchase
