Update: The Pajero’s appointment with the State Police was successful. It now has a valid VIN inspection allowing me to title and register it in New Mexico. Unfortunately, it is going to take five days for the paperwork to make it from the state police office to the MVD office about two miles away. With any luck, it will be titled and registered this time next week.
The F-150 is now first in line to get Svended this weekend and listed for sale, as the driveway is now at critical mass. I got the Jag titled and registered yesterday afternoon, which is probably the first time I’ve done that the same day I bought a car.
The turquoise plate felt like the way to go of the three standard NM plates.
The Pajero remains waiting for the weeping water pump to be replaced. I’ll take it this afternoon for its appointment with a State Police auto theft detective to resolve the VIN inspection required for out of state vehicles to be registered in NM. A couple of weeks ago the MVD was unable to deal with the fact the the truck’s chassis number is stamped on a plate rivited to the firewall and exists nowhere else on the truck. Their procedure manual calls for verifying a VIN in a minimum of two places on a vehicle.
My waterpump for a “Cat E306 excavator” showed up yesterday, so I can install it on the Pajero over the weekend. A box from Dubai also showed up with a new set of radiator hoses for the truck. It would feel unwise to not replace some 25 year old hoses while the cooling system is apart. These are probably the only new set of hoses for one of these trucks on this continent.

I'm very impressed with how quickly you made all this happen.

That license plate looks awesome. I wish PA had stuck to colorful plates instead of the bland white-with-fringes we have nowadays.

New Mexico doesn’t tend to do many things well, but we know how to do good license plates.

Yeah, that high contrast blue looks amazing! Georgia plates are boring, just a regular old peach on a white background. They weren’t always this way.
I’m also concerned about my new phone’s camera. After multiple attempts, this was the best I could do, despite holding it steady for several seconds and manual focusing.

Good luck with the VIN. I had to deal with three different agencies to get our Outback VIN verified. The problem was a lack of a title. They sent it to my Mom’s old address when I paid it off, so I don’t have one. Getting a replacement is a pain because I don’t live in the same state she did. So, they had to inspect the VIN in order to issue a new title, but the paperwork requires a current title in order to issue a new Louisiana title. The state trooper who inspected it pointed out a little checkbox on the paperwork that, if checked, waived the need for a current title. Even the DMV inspector didn’t know about it. If there’s one thing you should know in your life, it’s your job and the paperwork that goes along with it.

I’ve gotta say, New Mexico really crushes it in the license plate department. They’re so much better looking than most states’ plates.

Congrats on the Jaaag btw, such a beauty. And good for you going with a more interesting and jalop option. Any upgrades/updates you’re thinking about for the car? Know it’s still under warranty so probably not much?

This is a driving to work car, and a very good one at that, so I have no plans for anything beyond maintenance and upkeep.

I've got one on the F-150. I haven't decided what I'll get for the Pajero. The turquoise plates are my favorite, bit they're all good.

Only one weeping water pump, which is the kind of thing I expect when taking a low mileage old car and putting it back into regular use.
