This is random but I want to do a minor vent.
I hate Bad Takes® journalism and authors. That is authors and writing styles that bank on generating division and heated emotions in the comments to drive traffic to them and their writing.
Some are mild, where they sprinkle in bad information or silly ideas intentionally in order to get people in the comments to engage with them. A-la Doug DeMuro
Some are terrible, where the entire point is to pick a side so hard that you’re only choice is to galvanize one side or the other. Hard core talk radio “personalities”
The ones that bother me the most though are the ones in the middle. The ones that market themselves as bad take authors, as if saying it legitimizes it. These ones basically will pick the writing style that agitates the most people for the greatest effect. “engagement”.
These ones aren’t playing the algorithm in a mostly harmless way to increase their views and engagement, they aren’t playing to a core belief or ideology. These ones are just writing for maximum impact, and only that.
Not only is it painful to read owing to the natural saltiness of the writing, but the comment section is exactly what they are playing for - heated arguments, galvanized positions, battle lines.
You can call them out, but “hey man its my opinion.” sure.
The mild and extreme examples you can see for what it is any easily cope with it in one way or the other. We roll our eyes at Doug and poke fun while he uses a shovel to stack his income. We shake our heads and wonder what has happened to us as a people while the hardcores are likewise raking it in.
This middle ground is an every shifting dance. just controversial enough that you don’t cross over the line but disagreeable enough to “generate engagement” for their employers.
I honestly never thought I would need to use the kinja author blocker plugin again, but I guess I was wrong.
Rant out.

Who knew that being contrary for the sake of it would be bad.

All these people failed fact/opinion in kindergarten. It’s the whole alternative facts mindset.

depends on who you ask. they are obviously employed for this terrible skill so someone likes the way their garbage brings in the views.

Excellent choice sir.
What bugs me is that there are some great authors like David and Andrew that get less traction on their stories because you just can’t disagree with their assessments too much.

yeah, the phrase “hot take” immediately translates to me as “I’m just being contrary for its own sake ‘cos that’s what the kids are doing today, right?”

I see that you have been reading a certain FP author’ s (not going to call them out, rules and be excellent and what not) articles as well, mainly the pickup related ones.
As a person who loves pickups in all shapes and forms I feel the need to defend my interests (which from a site like Jalopnik I feel I should never have to do), but dealing with all of the arguments, both for and against, is just overwhelming and exhausting at this point. I made a comment on the last article stating that, but that’s probably the last time I try.

The salt in the wound on that particular story is that I sent it in as a tips. Had I know how it would be treated...ugh.

Ouch, that sucks. I do find it odd how Jalopnik has great pickup and SUV content from David/Andrew with lots of supportive comments , then two articles later a take on the complete opposite side of the spectrum, with equally as supportive (negative that is) comments.

Andrew /David - an enthusiasm for their hobby.
Brownell - everyone is stupid but me.
One of those will generate some flack for their perspective. The other will generate division generally .
Last time I send in a tip though. I've sent in several and I'm finding lately that they will report on it and they will not credit.

Since when did people decide “edgy” is cool and should be celebrated? It’s dumb. I’m tired of seeing lists of top ten movies/shows/songs/whatever where the reasoning behind their choices is just that it’s “edgy”. That doesn’t automatically make it good!!!
My edgy hot take is that edginess for its own sake is stupid.
