It’s been my practice to share a fist bump with every student at the beginning of every class as they file in. Those fist bumps add up to a degree of proximity comfort that cannot be overstated. Nevertheless, the advice has been to do elbow bumps instead and I tried those just now and it makes me have to get much closer to the student, close enough to smell them, and we’ll be sticking with fist bumps.

hahahaha about the smell part, but I will say if we’re all supposed to cough into our elbows, i don’t recommend an elbow bump...

Generally, you don’t need to be very close. Shop Teacher can tell you about this.

Middle school students may be quite pungent. Thus t he radius of space surrounding them in which you can detect their odor is large.

Luckily my sense of smell is not particularly keen.

One of the few ... or probably only ... benefit of growing up with parents that were both heavy smokers, who thought nothing of smoking in the house/car with the windows closed.
