“You’re young, you won’t be killed by this virus, only people who are 50+ die from it” is a pretty selfish response. Even though it seems true, I don’t want to spread it to someone who can die from it. Why have pointless deaths when preventative measures aren’t even that challenging?

This chart from a Business Insider article shows why it should be taken seriously. It really affects older people
South Korea also has a better healthcare system than the US. If you’re young, sure this probably isn’t going to affect you, but for anyone over the age of 70 they are facing at least a 1 in 25 chance that they die from this if they get it.
Would you risk your life on a 1 in 25 chance?

this, exactly. If I start to feel sick, I’m shutting in. I’d probably call my Dr. office w/ my symptoms and ask for advice. But I wouldn’t be going anywhere near my parents for a while given my dad has pretty much every risk factor for severe complications.

no, the hoax is that the Dems and China are in cahoots to make Trump look bad. We had some local events canceled due to this (recommendation from the state gov to not hold gatherings of more than 200 people or so.) South Korea also has some of the lowest fatality rates we are seeing. Overall they are roughly at 0.8% compared to 6.6% for Italy (Iran is probably higher still) , and a WHO estimate of 3.4% for the disease as a whole. So yeah, scale those numbers up for countries with worse healthcare than South Korea, which for the average person, probably includes the US.

The “young = safe” mentality is also dangerous. Most of the highly correlated commodities don’t outwardly present symptoms. I know many young people who have conditions that present a serious and potentially lethal complication to recovery from coronavirus. Diabetes, Asthma, IBD, any condition that puts a constant load on your immune system will become significantly more serious with this.

This is absolutely true. Non-medical people are not aware of how limited our medical capacity is. A few big accidents and ER’s start ‘diverting’. We don’t have the China ability of building new hospitals in a few weeks.
M
y former hospital
advertised bed capacity was m

600 beds?
That does not mean we could handle 6

patients. We were staffed for 120-150 beds. Much more than that and we started diverting.

That should be a helpful graphic for some.
Not gonna lie, I really thought it was being blown out of proportion at first, but it’s looking serious. Then again, I know when I’ve fucked up and can admit it. I fucked up.
Even our workplace is currently evaluating our systems to see if they can handle a sudden surge of teleworkers... the virus hasn’t really hit hard yet in Canada but confirmed cases are popping up.
I still have flights to Japan for mid-April, but it’s looking like a cancellation at this point whether it’s initiated by me or the government.
I’m not panicking, but the severity of the situation feels like it’s many times worse than a month ago where I felt confident about flying to Japan.

Here in Maryland the state just issued an order that retirement homes, assisted living etc are all restricted to essential visitors only. There are some confirmed cases at a retirement community near me but they’re doing this to prevent it from being introduced to those vulnerable populations.
My 96 year old grandma is in another such facility a couple towns over and it’s unclear if any of us family members will be able to visit her. My dad checks in on her fairly regularly but I’m not sure he qualifies as “essential.” The governor is supposed to speak at 4 pm today hopefully with more details.

I deal in insurance, but I train people on how to do it properly. Guidelines, legalities, customer service, underwriting, accounting, but teaching this to front-line CSRs for our company. I do occasionally interact with customers, and it’s usually customers that are unreasonable, e.g.:
Client: what do you mean I don’t have insurance, that’s what I pay you guys for!
Me: That’s correct, sir! That’s why we provided you with insurance up until July last year when we stopped receiving payments from you! We even gave you a month to catch up on the payment!
Client: rabblerabblerabblerabble
Me: *Picard facepalm* *infects self*
Plus, I’ve seen how people wash hands in this office building (we share it with a few other companies)... it’s touching my own face that’s a concern. Unfortunately for HR reasons I can’t slap clients or CSRs.

That’s totally cool. Not the COVID part, but how the traps react. That first ball hits and takes out like four rows almost instantaneously. So if two balls dropped instead of one, it would build up more rapidly, but I think the model would hit the same maximum rate, only sooner.
