"HFV has no HFV. But somehow has 2 motorcycles" (hondasfordsvolvo)

This has been posted on a jalopnik already, but that place is scary.
This look exactly like what I hoped it would. Maybe a tad larger but that’s not surprising. I’m glad their is a 2 door because much like the Wrangler Umlimited the 4 door is a longboi. Altho the short overhangs might be visually lengthening the wheelbase.

Im anxious for a doors off picture. With the b pillar covered by the doors it's going to look drastically different than the Wrangler doorless. Not saying it will be bad, just interested in what they have made it look like.

My opinion doesn’t matter here because this is not my segment of vehicle, but this is the internet so you’ re all going hear what I think anyway... like it or not suckers! Haha
I think it’s incredibly boring looking. It’s as boxy and slab sided as the original was, which is probably the point, but I feel like we are WELL passed the retro-is-cool styling phase from 10-20 years ago .
Maybe the powertrains will make it more interesting, but so far I feel like the Wrangler has much more personality and uniqueness in it’s styling, love it or hate it.
And yes, I know the Wrangler looks a lot like the old ones too, but like the 911, it has just evolved rather than going retro.

It won’t happen, but it would be cool if they offered the 3.0 ecoboost and a manual. And no, I don't want or need the graphite 2.7l. The 3.0 should do nicely

Man a 2 door 5.0 with a manual might have gotten my order, had this come out a year ago.

I prefer boxy for my SUVs. Boxy means roomy inside with good visibility. I do think that it will look a lot more interesting with the top removed though.

I was hoping this would split the difference between the 4Runner and Wrangler. Seems to skew slightly more to the 4Runner in size, which I think is the better move. Also if you notice all the prototype promotional videos you see that they focus more on open dirt and sand rather than rock crawling so this can be a wrangler competitor without taking over the same space and completing head to head on every single point.
Plus decently powerful engines are guaranteed! I hope they put their new hybrid system in this as that would have torque benefits on the trail and mpg gains on the tarmac.

I believe the 2.3 and 2.7 have been confirmed. I’d be surprised is if they put anything else in it. Maybe the 5.0.

Is that a leaf spring or a control arm showing on the rear axle?

It looks more interesting than another anonymous jellybean. Who says boxy is bad?
I like it.

We have to keep trucks boxy, these new suppository shaped shit cans have to go. Land Rover is dead to me, this looks like a better new Defender.

Laaaaame. Maybe they'll make an aluminum 2.7 for it. Doesn't make sense to have a cast iron version in something that won't tow all that much.

It’s iron so you can throw lots of boost in it

But you don't need cast iron to take boost. Ford knows that very well already. They did it to save money if I remember correctly.

I guess I’m of the opposite opinion. I don’t think enough cars have explored their retro possibilities.
More than that, I think that reusing old design elements is a critical part of maintaining a car’s brand identity. The technology in cars must evolve, yes. And some of that technology will include aerodynamics. But if they’re going to reuse old names, then the car must be instantly recognizable as such. Just as people inherit their looks from their ancestors, so must a car bear some visual cues from previous generations.
Nothing against seeing fresh faces in the car world, though. It’s just that if they’re to o fundamentally different and unrecognizable , then it’s important for them to have a new name all their own.

Under that boxy skin is the current Ranger platform...so it’ll never be the rock crawler that the Wrangler is. However, it will drive around the suburbs, on the interstate and even on open dirt with aplomb. The Ranger Raptor in Oz demonstrates that perfectly.
As for new engines and drivelines...ha! This Ranger platform was developed over a decade ago for the southeast Asian and European markets. Hybrid wasn’t a thing then in these trucks nor w ere fat high capacity petrol engines. If Ford US want to stuff something else in it then they’ll have to do even more re-engineering and that will cut their profit margins solidly.
Meanwhile, the Rest of the World awaits their new Ranger (aka the new VW Amarok)...

From what I understand this was getting the same platform that the new Ranger will ride on. Not the same as the one currently on sale in the US.
I remember reading that the 2.3 turbo was a sure thing and the 2.7 was a strong possibility. Both being more powerful than either of the Wranglers engines. I guess the hybrid was more speculative but to me it would make sense to use the one from the new explorer to prop up fleet mpg.

Lead development on the new RoW Ranger/Amarok is being delivered by Volkswagen.
The Bronco rides on a version of the current T6 Ranger platform. However, because this is Ford and America, there’s every reason to imagine that the Bronco iteration of the platform will find itself under the next North American version of the Ranger... because it would keep it cheap.
Can't help you with the gas engines as we don't get them anymore. I think they offered the 2.7 for a time in base trims. These days it's either the 3.2 litre TD or the 2.0 litre twin turbo diesel (the latter being the premium donk)
