I have to share a (very expensive and very refined classic) car? I would sneakily enter the rock-paper-scissors contest on the side to snag this beauty . I saw a Caravelle/Floride in a junkyard once and it was glorious.

Though I might want to keep a Tatra for more formal occasions

That is, assuming the SM was already taken and I wasn’t too tempted by some interesting Minis or 2CVs

And the real question: Which two-faced little bugger gets the Janus ?

I’m also annoyed that their website deliberately prevents us proles from copying the image addresses into our cute little blogs, since that means I can’t post an image of this .

Sure thing. It may or may not have been built on an ancient Indian burial gr o und, though, so you may have to exterminate a few ghosts. Otherwise, enjoy your large slab of concrete!

Well, I have never seen a Dauphine, but I do love rear engined Renaults. But then again that Fiat 850 coupe is pretty tempting, and both are practically unheard of in the USA while retaining some parts availability abroad.   What would your DD pick be? (other than the 2CVs, minis, obvious choices)

Either the 1955 Hudson Italia, 1927 Hudson fire truck, or the Mercedes Benz 300SL Gullwing.

So, that’s a great question— a “onetime only” windfall drops in your lap. A single dream car purchase is suddenly feasible. What would it be?

I’m going Porsche 959.

I think I’d go with a Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing. That’s been a dream car of mine for a long time, but alas, they’re far from within my price range and aren’t getting cheaper anytime soon. That or some sort of classic Ferrari.

Wait, what year was it when you got the T Bird? I didn’t know it was your first. Of course, I wish I could make decisions like that without coming to my senses first, which is how I ended up with a Cruze over a Cherokee and older Pathfinder.

Well, let’s see, I only stopped dailying it late last year  when the engine started running poorly, and I’d been driving it for ( give or take) two years before that, and I had it for about a year before that, driving it occasionally. So I think I got it somewhere around 2017?

Is the windfall large enough I don’t have to worry about maintenance costs? If not, a Duesenberg of yet-to-be-determined model.

Otherwise, man, I really don’t know. My ambitions are pretty low, I might just take an ultra-clean M715 or flatfender.

Yeah, that was my point--  For a lot of us, it’s probably a single car that’s uniquely personal.  Not necessarily a $40M Ferrari 250GTO.

Yeah, the 300SL was my other alternate.

But, a ‘63 Split Window C2 might make my list.

One “dream car”-- what would it be?

Actually, scratch wh at I said earlier, I got it in 2018 and drove it for 1.5 years before starting the process of fixing the engine.

I wasn’t quite that brave with my first choice, also in mid 2018, but kudos to you for going all out.   Are you counting this as your first car ever or just your first independent purchase?

I guess you are a little younger than I thought then. Are you driving anything else while your engine is out? I just can’t remember if it was mentioned.

For me, a dream car would have to be unique in the USA but common enough in other markets that I could actually get parts. That would probably end up being one of the rear engined Renaults like the Dauphine but I would happily take a 2CV or a Morris Traveler (or mini).

First car ever. I couldn’t stand the thought of spending my hard-earned money on a “boring car”, so I bought the most un-boring car I could find, figuring that if I’m learning how to fix cars anyway, the worst case scenario is that I’ll get some practice. And wow, practice I am indeed getting. Well w orth it, though.

While the Thunderbird’s not running, I’ve been driving my sister’s 2002 Civic. She doesn’t use it much, so sharing it has been working out pretty well. And the Civic has a manual, so that’s fun. A fter driving a 54 year-old car for so long, working air conditioning and a radio that plays more than one station are nice bonuses as well. When I get the T-bird running again, it’ll go back to daily driver duty, though. I’ve m issed driving it.

That’s a truly inspiring story, especially since I am thinking of upgrading my fun factor this summer, when I get a little cash and time. Chances are I won’t go too long without having to learn to wrench if I get a Mini or a NB Miata.

I think you would find a 2012 Civic to be a whole different animal than a 2002. It’s a shame, since I like analogue quite a bit, but also have got used to using the digital speedo next to my analogue one so who am I to say anything?

Is your T Bird a stick BTW ?

A Stratos? A Dino? Really I just wish for another Alfa GTV 2000, as now my rusted out $1200 old daily would probably cost $10k and a clean partial restore $40k+..

The fourth-gen Thunderbird was sadly never available with a manual. The only option was a three-speed automatic. This is why you don’t see many fourth-gen T-birds winning drag races. The 390 V8 is rated at somewhere around 300 hp, but the three-speed slushbox chews up that power and spits it out in the form of 11-second 0-60 times assuming everything is working perfectly. Still a fun cruiser, though. And the V8 makes delightful burbly noises :p

Sounds like a great cruiser. I can sympathize, since pretty much the only reason I would sell my Cruze is because of the terrible transmission (and fragile, which I don’t want to pay for), except I really need every ounce of my 138 hp to accelerate while 300 leaves a little room for power losses
