Help me....I’m looking at full size trucks. Tundras are the most expensive for the year/price range I’m looking at. GMC’s are available and I like them the most but fuel mileage isn’t great. Ford’s are a dime a dozen. I’m thinking about a straight trade for the Taco. Praise Jeebus for the stupid crazy resale value on the Taco.

Back to my initial question, how do I accurately determine the tow rating while on the lot? I’m looking at used so their isn’t really a window sticker I trust.

Any idea. Is it as simple as:

C urb weight- GCVWR=Tow Rating?

This is a complex math. Even on brand new truck it can be difficult to figure the tow rating. A different wheelbase, options package, final drive ratio, brake package, cab layout, transmission option, engine, wheels and tires... It all effects the final result. I mean look at the Ford tow rating matrix for new F150s for an example...

https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=https://www.ford.com/cmslibs/content/dam/brand_ford/en_us/brand/resources/general/pdf/guides/19Towing_Ford_F150_Oct25.pdf&ved=2ahUKEwjm9crOwZDoAhXkhXIEHXK5Bv0QFjAYegQIBRAB&usg=AOvVaw2puLKn_8UosSPhRwNaOEWR

GCVWR - (curb weight) doesn’t give you the whole story, but its probably as close as you’ll get without a full matrix.

At l east you are looking at trucks new enough that the charts should still be pretty easy to find.

I recommend a Ford F650. I don’t know what the tow rating is, but something tells me it is sufficient.

This one’s for sale and can be yours for the low, low price of $60,000.

Tow package vs not. It gets muddy quickly but it still comes down to max total weight of the system(GCVWR) , vehicle and trailer. Take away the truck and it should be right. Then there is the payload rating, tongue weight max, passenger weight, fluids.......

I’m sure as hell not taking the word of a sales person. I’d like to not screw around and research every option and come back a couple days later.

Check the owner’s manual.  There should be a page that has a chart for the tow ratings on the various available configuration.

It’s all model specific, seems like it should be in the owners manual supplement or internet search on a quad cab 2014 gmc sierra 4x4 tow rating.... IIRC the 1/2 tons are still pretty good but you need a 2500 to go over 10,000 lbs.

2014 GMC Sierra 1500 BASE PRICE $44,420 PAYLOAD CAPACITY 1982 lb TOWING CAPACITY 9600 lbEPA CITY/HWY FUEL ECON16/22 mpg
