Thanks for letting me have a place to post about my dumb stuff.

This stuff includes: my 1985 Jeep Cherokee with the Renault 2.1td engine, my Mitsubishi Diesel-swapped 91 Mazda B2600i 4x4, my wife’s 98 Cherokee, our 1986 E350 Camping Bus(nicknamed SquatchBus) my 1972 Harbor Freight-swapped Simplicity 4040 garden tractor, or my hand-built tube amplifiers I build from recycled pieces.

Ill post some pics of my Jeep now. I got it 5 years ago and it sat in my field untilb 2 years ago. I discovered my uncle put the timing belt on wrong so I fixed that, and it started. The wife and I ripped out the carpet and put down molded rubber flooring, and I pulled out and ‘glassed the headliner before covering in speaker felt carpet and reinstalling. It had 135k on it when I started driving it and just turned 155k. It’s been repainted, and is basically a glorified junkbox. It’s rare. But its also my daily. Also the Turbo Diesel emblem on the back came from the donor Dodge Ram 50 that’s engine went into my Mazda. The only issue I’ve had in the jeep is somehow the cooling fan broke off and went into my radiator. No new radiators available, so we farmer fixed it by crimping off and soldering the damaged tubes. New electric fan and it’s golden. 22mpg.

Oh, cool, and rare! I do love me random French car stuff and a French-powered Jeep is pretty random! :D

Are those motors pretty reliable?

That is cool! I’d also like to know more about, well, all of your vehicles, but in particular the SquatchBus (?)

Well, I don’t think they have a find following in the jeep world. It’s a bit anemic. But if iremember that and don’t expect it to be a powerhouse, I think it’s ok. In 20k besides the rad repair, I’ve not done anything but oil and filter changes.

The Renault His engine was used in Renault delivery vans and cars and such across a broad range of years. The only other US vehicle that has it was a Winnebago that was a gutted Renault Space van turned into an RV.

I was given a rather large pile o spares with it, which is nice.

You have a Jeep made partially out of unobtainium. Good find.

Welcome!! I’m a recent arrival as well, so I can assure you that you are bound to love it here based on your car choice. Some tips:

Make sure you change the time at the top of the draft before posting. Otherwise, it will post to the time you first opened the draft.

I see you’ve already mastered the post tags too.

Other than that, let your inner nerd flow!

Yeah... Quite a few years ago I wanted a fancy pants bootiki tube guitar amp. I saw inside of one once and thought “huh. I bet I can do that.” I learned how to read schematics, a little theory, and went to town. Worked for Benson Amps i n portland for a minute. Here’s a   gut shot of a HiFi amp I recently designed and finished. Chassis and transformers are from a vintage console stereo.

Yep. Honestly, Jeeps weren’t even on my radar as a vehicle I wanted(I was into vintage Volvo’s and BMWs) but when Uncle Mark dropped this off, I was intrigued.

Unfortunately I was also given a crate of engine parts that, at the time, I didn't know what the were or care too much and they are... No longer. Luckily, though, in a little over 22k I haven't needed them.

Ill do a writeup on That soon. We got it last year and quickly realized after purchasing that if we wanted to build a tiny home school bus, we need a bigger one. But this is what we have now, so we'll outfit it for camping. We plan on doing some more work this spring(like actually building inside) so there will be more pics and such.

In 1985 and 86, it was an option here. I mean, when your choices are 2.1 diesel, 2.5 gas or 2.8 gas, why not?!?

The rest of the world had the 2.1 u til 1993 or so when they switched to the 2.5 vm motori diesel. That we also did not get.

S o I used some aluminum trim to secure it where the dome lights were. I plan to get some led lights to mount there. But for now I have battery powered lights from harbor freight.

You sound like me.  Jeeps weren't on my radar, I'm a big 90s BMW fan.  Then I happened upon an 88 Comanche and fell in love.   I'll own another 5 speed 4.0L jeep at some point because of it.

I came across an 86 Comanche with the Renault 2.1 diesel.  I was told it was slow and some parts were unobtainable.
