I understand that emissions equipment is a bummer, I like power, I like the idea of tuning...but the law exists for good reasons and you don’t get to flaunt it just because you have a tv show.

I never understood rolling coal... It doesn’t increase performance, it’s bad for your engine’s health, it makes your truck look like it’s broken by dumping sooty smoke out the exhaust pipes, because you basically ARE breaking it on purpose, it’s bad for the environment and disgusting for anyone that has to breathe air near it... Not to mention that pretty much its only purpose is to annoy people. It’s quite possibly the douche- iest mod in existence. Let them get sued, the world will be a better place because of it.

Too bad part of the penalty couldn’t have been that they had to suck on an exhaust pipe of one of their “modified” trucks for 15-20 minutes.

From their attorney
What’s disappointing is that the parties were unable to resolve this through a private settlement, which would have resulted in a lot more of a restorative effort in Utah
Because people facing legal consequences for violating the law is disappointing somehow.
And if they are so concerned about restorative efforts in Utah your clients could...I don’t know...donate their time and money on their own.

Basically, yeah. I used to know someone like that, and it was almost funny how absurd they were at times. He did indeed have a coal-rolling truck which he bragged about blasting Priuses with. He also mocked this one poor guy mercilessly for driving a Mini Cooper (a rather nice one, I might add), calling it a girl’s car and claiming his truck could beat it in a race. I tried to defend the Mini driver and said that the truck would lose as soon as corners were involved in the race, but the truck guy insisted that “NUH-UH, MY TRUCK HAS 400 BRAKE HORSEPOWER! I’M FASTER THAN A MINI!” W never did manage to convince him that power doesn’t help you in corners... His friends then pointed out he couldn’t even drive a manual without stalling, and he proceeded to BRAG about how his truck has an automatic, so his truck shifts perfectly all the time. He was annoying.

Dunno. But I do know that he was a big fan of gangsta rap, as he would blast it constantly. I used to die inside a lot back then... I actually pre f er red it when the redneck bros would blast their ridiculous country music instead. I’m not a fan of either genre, but “Honky T onk L ike Donky Kong” is infinitely superior to “I’m gonna #$%^&8&^$%^##^%$&$ !#%&*&^!!!!!!! We just had a discussion about what people should and shouldn’t do with their cars or which cars they should or shouldn’t buy. I think it’s worth reflecting upon how this story does or doesn’t go along with the spirit of that last discussion. My own opinion about coal rolling is that it amounts to people defecating on the sidewalk with the express purpose of causing certain groups of people to step in it...

Roundup is the worst. It’s only effective at killing weeds because it has horrible poisons in it that’ll harm just about anything, including people. There have been all sorts of studies finding horrible things Roundup can do, but the company keeps squashing them with lawyers. I might sound like some organic health nut, but mostly I just really hate Roundup. There are better ways to kill plants.

Always gonna be tasteless car mods. Stancing ruins handling, tire wear, and will grind off the bottom of your car. Before that there were donks. Before that, there were rice rods. Before that, you would lift the rear suspension (putting all the weight on the front tires, losing traction) put massive drag tires on, and paint flames on your hood.

According to my old boss, most of the ones done in the period were not done correctly and he would routinely smoke people simply because they couldn’t get traction despite the massive tires.

Seriously, I used some of it on an area of poison ivy near my house and years later things still aren’t really growing there. Umm, well at least we don’t have poison ivy, and it’s all downhill from my house and anything that would affect any of us or anyone else (there’s not another house down the hill for almost half a mile).

It really is. What’s really scary is that some of the few studies that resisted pressure from Roundup to keep quiet found some... disturbing things. They found stuff like mutations developing in mice after a few generations being exposed to it, with some of the mice even growing hair inside their mouths, which just... ew. There was even some suggestion that the widespread use of Roundup products could be at least partially linked to the growing number of kids with allergies, health problems, and mental disorders. It’s certainly not helping anyone. I’ve read of ways to make your own weed killers using stuff like vinegar and warm water that aren’t nearly as harmful to humans and are almost just as effective as Roundup, and I think I’ll go with them instead.

I’ve used vinegar and it works alright. I’ve now started to just plant more stuff that prevents weeds from going. Easy to do in the desert.

A thought just came to me... Does this mean that raising the rear suspension of a front wheel drive car will improve traction in a straight line? I know Gassers raise the front suspension to put more weight on the rear wheels, but would it work the other way for front wheel drive cars as well? What would the downside be, besides the obvious higher center of gravity?

I don’t think they are similar arguments at all . One is - should a person be able to choose a car that isn’t directly related to their needs. The other is should a person be able to disregard the law because it doesn’t align with their wants.
Like we tell our kids, you are free to choose but you don’t get to choose the consequences . They chose to put their believes and business model above the law...they are free to do so. They are not free from the consequences of such actions. They knew they were in direct violation with the law and I have no sympathy.

That’s fair. I personally think the coal-rolling bro trucks are an affront on multiple layers. If they were making performance mods that happened to make the vehicles smokier, that’d be one thing, but it seems like making lots of smoke is part of the plan.

I mean, even a tune that simply deletes the emissions equipment is pretty questionable. PM2.5 in combination with ground level ozone is a HUGE contributor to utah notoriously crappy winter air. Someone intentionally removing their particulate filters because they don’t like what it does to their performance? yeah sorry. No.

Fair enough. The California smog requirements that the rest of the country likes to beef about all came from people breathing car exhaust. Please don’t get me wrong: I’m not taking issue with you, just having a partner-share thinkaloud.
There are some issues, like rolling coal or coming last minute to the provident living game, or other things, that crisscross the political spectrum. Somewhere in Flyover Country, maybe population is sparser and people can roll coal and nobody notices the effects. At the same time, politically, it’s an opportunity to own some Liberals.
Then again, my old van is pre-75 and belches, but I’m not driving it until I get the newer carburetor for it so it belches less.
I’m with you 100% on this. I was just curious whether you saw any overlap to the other, and you don’t, and I agree with you there, too.

Presumably. I wasnt good enough at math to be an engineer though. I would worry about stability and you would have to have stiff springs to prevent compression at launch. I’ve never seen it on an fwd drag car so my guess would be something bad
