My trusty passport 9500ix died after 6 years so I went with the Uniden R3 for $300. Very highly rated, and I put it through its paces this weekend with a 4 hour round trip. Picks up Ka band at crazy long distances. I am still playing around with the gazillion settings with the filters and such.

I’ve got a passport max I picked up two weeks after I got my M3.

I considered the ones with the arrows but they’re just too expensive

Does it pick up lazers? The last time I got a speeding ticket, it was for 65 in a 55 and the fine was over $500. The risk-versus-reward curve is too steep. Or too shallow, whichever.

Just buy a laser jammer?

Depends on location , it might be illegal- While radar jammers are illegal in all 50 states due to federal law, laser jammers/scramblers are regulated by states. Currently, these devices are legal in all states except California, Colorado, Illinois, Minnesota, Nebraska, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia and Washington, D.C.

Wait. They are illegal in California? Of course they are. Well dang I was planning on buying a full system for my car.

Ouch! over $ 500 for 10 above?!

Yes it does but honestly, 99% of the time, by the time you get the alert the officer probably alread y has your speed.

Most departments still use K/ Ka Band radar, and it’s very helpful on the freeway.

I have had my V1 since highschool! It was my graduation gift from my father. I have updated it over the years but it stays in glovebox of the M3. I haven’t used it in years because Waze, but I kind of want to break it out.

To be that guy, as being a Canadian means any radar or laser jammers are illegal here...couldn’t you just like...not speed?

I mean, doesn’t it logically make more sense to not speed, therefore not spend $300 to need a detector and to then use that $300 for something more useful or important?

Not trying to be mean or anything, I just don’t legitimately get it....you’re spending $300 on something you could do by just not pushing your right foot down an extra few centimeters while driving.

I LOVE my R3, but if I was in the market today, I’d definitely go for the R7. The R3 blows everything else out of the water concerning detection, but I hate not having arrows. Th e R7 is literally the best you can get from a self contained unit.

It does detect Laser. You’re screwed by the time it does, but on the off chance it reflects off another car, it could help. Here in MN jammers are illegal, but I’ve honestly never seen a cop use it to catch speeders. Not here in the twin cities anyways.....

Also, where TF does 10 over get you a $500 ticket??? Remind me never to go there.

Eh, yes and no. I have the R7, 360, V1, and the new V1G2 that just started shipping last week. The R7 kind of sucks in actual use. Range wise it’s about even with the new V1G2 and is noticeably better than the others. However, unless I turn the K band sensitivity in general and the rear horn for everything down it’s the most annoying with picking up every blind spot monitor, other radar detectors and who knows what. Laser is worthless on it, it’s never alerted me a single time for laser (even while driving by troopers standing outside shooting me) while the V1 and 360 have both saved me multiple times.

Also, the GPS lockouts are garbage compared to the V1s using V1Driver and the Escort Max 360. They aren’t smart enough to lockout a signal from when it starts, so if I waited 30sec to lock one out Then every time I go by it it’ll alert for about 30 seconds before shutting up. Plus it’s gigantic.

The best of all is the new V1G2. It’s not even on their site yet, only those of us who preordered before they were announced have them. Tests have found it has the same range as the R7, but it is much more intelligent with alerts, I no longer know where every Honda and Mazda in my area is. It also now has built in Bluetooth, so it connects right up to your phone and with an app like JBV1 or V1Driver it does auto lockouts like the Max 360.

I like the V1G2 well enough after driving with it for a few days wthat I sold my original V1 and 360 last week and will be selling my R7 and getting a second V1G2 for the other car.

Having owned them all, I’d go V1G2, Max 360, V1, then R7. The Max is a bit behind the R7 in range but not by much but has a much better ramp up, actual working useful GPS alerts, much better build and screen  plus the nice app. It’s the best choice if you want great performance but don’t want to screw with anything and don’t want to be annoyed unnecessarily

Until Radenso comes out with the Theia, it’s the best there is. Theia looks to be on another level but rumors have it over $1000, so I don’t think I’ll be buying that.

If you can’t tell, I’m a radar enthusiast. I really enjoy the tech and using them.

Great Info! I agree the BSM miscues on the R3 are a bit much, and the laser is definitely useless . In my defense the majority of my research was from 2 years ago when I got my R3. At $1k, that thing better be magic!

There are devices which jam the laser signal back to the officer’s gun. I’m no expert, but I believe they delay the signal long enough for you to get slowed down before the officer can read your speed. They are not allowed in MN where I live.
