Going through my hoarded selection of tech today - I should not stack a laptop in the corner for 8 years after I stop using it...
Here’s my old daily driver - it’s one of the first 17" laptops, this thing was amazing.
It h ad one of the first dual core laptop processors ever (Core Duo baby!), had a very high resolution screen of 1440x900, dedicated graphics, took a ton of memory (4 GB! ) and even had 2 hard drive slots! This thing was amazing back in 2006. I particularly loved the dual hard drives as I used it to leave my XP intact on one while putting another (or more than one ) OS on the second drive. This machine helped me get serious into tech.
The downside is that the fucker is like 2" thick and has to weigh something like 12 pounds. Picking it up today makes me wonder how I ever carried this thing around in my bag for so many years.
Next to go through is all of the flash drives and SD cards that got tossed into a drawer. Also hard drives pulled out of other things. That stack of HDDs is about half what I need to go through. Make sure I don’t need anything off of them - then smash them with a hammer. Data Destruction!!!
Here’s another stack of laptops I went through last night - pulled any data off I needed and then to the recycler!
Tub fu ll of old power supplies and cables!!!
Ladies and gentleman - I used to thing I had mild hoarding tendencies. The last month or so I’ve been cleaning out the house with vigor and now am thoroughly convinced it was well beyond that! Don’t buy a big house people, it’s way too easy to fill with stuff...

I have a bin with 6 laptops in it because my local dump only does tech recycling days like twice a year and I always seem to miss them.

Lol. My Hoarder teacher wife had 3 of these in her classroom and didn't even know it, and yes we got whole closet of old tech that I need to go through now that I think of it.

I’m lucky, there’s a E-r ecycling company like 10 minutes from my house. It just opened recently, I used to have to drive an hour to one...

That’s one of the harder parts of hoarders like me and your wife. These things are on occasion useful! I’ve sold several thousand dollars of tools and tech recently while cleaning out, but more went to goodwill and even more in the trash.

For sure. Believe me I'll hear about this for awhile.

Other than the color of the wall, all of your pictures could be my home office. And I have even more stuff in the garage. Too much (old) tech!!!

I used to do a fair bit of independent contracting with tech and my stash of parts and old random stuff was frequently useful then. Frequently when I would throw something out, next month I could have used it.
I haven’t worked like that in 5 years though, so everything I don’t have a need for right now goes!

Yep - I’ve been cleaning so there are stacks everywhere. Some already gone through - some to go through - some to go through again after I think about it.

I cleaned out tech stuff
back in the
fall, started erasing drives but found it easier to pull platters instead. Can’t get data if there’s no platters.

The correct way to decomm ission a computer hard drive is with a firearm.

This strikes close to home. We’ve been doing a months long renovation of the office. 350 sqft and we’ve been using it as a tech dumping ground for like... seven years. So much “good” stuff that really, really needs to go. Ended up with two trips to the electronics recycler and it might be time for a third. Kinda got me on a rampage of throwing out stuff though, which is both a blessing and a curse...

That is definitely my favorite way, until it comes time to clean the shards up...

Humbug. I have a hard drive at home I perforated with my cousin’s Ruger Super Alaskan in .454 Casull. Now, that’s a fun revolver to shoot. He loaded some maximum energy rounds last summer and ka-BOOM!

Yep, I used to have access to an industrial shredder that was awesome to chuck drives in.
I just usually shoot them now.

That round in that short a barrel has got to sound like a cannon going off.
My favorite revolver was a S&W 460 XVR that would should 460, 454 and 44 LC rounds. It weighed like 8 pounds but was fun!

Wants to jump out of your hand, too. I love shooting that thing.
My favorite report that I ever heard is on Cousin’s M-1 Garand. That is a great rifle.

If they’re in a state that can be reassembled, there’s always a chance. Shred ‘em if you got ‘em.

Drive cases and control boards are long gone, platters are sitting on my desk as coasters. No chance of being reassembled and I got a bunch of free coasters out of it.

I’ve shot a 454 . My hand hurts thinking about it.
Last night at the range after practice (I coach Junior Smallbore Rifle & Air Rifle) I put some slugs through my 12 gauge pump gun. It reminded me why I haven’t shot slugs through my pump gun in so long . My s houlder is raw today.
I was chatting with the juniors and one of them wants to shoot an M-1 , so I think next practice one of my Garands will be making a range visit.

I love the thunderous report of the Garand. Imagine a WWII firefight with hundreds of them blazing away at once. And what a devastating round to be on the business end of.

Garands are awesome, that’s why I’ve got 2! Actually one is mine and the other was a gift, but they are fantastic once you learn their idiosyncrasies. And the .30-06 is a hoss of a round, way over powered for what it was used for.

I had planned on cleaning my tech closet out in November, still haven’t started it. Kind of afraid to, to be honest.

It was a tough thing to start, but it’s been satisfying to see my shelves empty out.
